| MARE LIBERUM Detention order illegal Oct 02 21:38The Federal Ministry of Transport is no longer allowed to arrest the two ships 'Mare Liberum' and 'Sebastian K' belonging to the Mare Liberum refugee aid organization. According to a decision by the Hamburg Administrative Court on Oct 1, 2020, the detention orders are illegal. The court thus granted an urgent motion by the Berlin association Mare Liberum, which observes the human rights situation for migrants on the Turkish-Greek sea border. The Ministry of Transport prevented the “Mare Liberum” and “Sebastian K” from leaving port in mid-August, justifying this by saying that the vessels did not have the necessary ship safety certificates. It referred to a change in the Ship Safety Ordinance that has been in force since spring. According to the explanatory memorandum, the change was made in particular to enforce stricter safety rules for smaller ships that are used for "private sea rescue, environmental protection and other humanitarian purposes". Lesvos residents prevented NGO ship from docking Mar 06 11:59Residents on the island of Lesvos prevented the N‘Mare Liberum’ to dock at the port of Mytilini for resupply on March 5, 2020. The move was part of the continuing protests on the island due to the migrant crisis, that has seen locals clash with police in recent weeks over a proposal for more migrant camps on the island. The ‘Mare Liberum’ departed for an unknown destination, after being informed by port authorities that it cannot sail east and north of the island due to military exercises involving shell firing. Before heading to Mytilini port, the ship was tied at Skala Loutron, south of Mytilini, which it left after its crew was attacked by unknown people in the night of March 1. Gearbox damage forced ship to port Aug 14 2015 12:22The "Sea-Watch" had to abort the search for distressed migrants on Aug 7 and returned to Lampedusa due to a broken ball bearing in the gearbox. | Ambra assisted distressed migrants Oct 02 21:56On Oct 2, 2020, Malta’s Armed Forces were towing a distressed vessel that had previously been assisted and monitored by the 'Ambra'. The organisation Alarm Phone received a distress call from 38 migrants onboard the distressed vessel in the night of Oct 1. The 'Ambra', enroute from Annaba to Gabes, diverted to the scene and spent around 12 hours monitoring the situation until an AFM boat was spotted. The 'Ambra' reported back to Alarm Phone, saying the AFM had failed to repair the engine and began to tow the boat northwards to an unspecified destination. The 'Ambra' left the scene shortly after the AFM showed up. On at least one occasion, the Armed Forces of Malta attempted to push a migrant boat back towards Libya, and on another occasion attempted to push a boat with migrants in the direction of the Italian island of Lampedusa. The efforts of Alarm Phone to contact the Malta Rescue Coordination centre were unsuccessful. Towed through Bosphorus Nov 19 2012 13:49General cargo vessel Ambra suffered an engine failure off Istanbul on Nov 16 2012, presumably in or near Bosphorus en route from Black sea to Benghazi.
