CMA CGM VELA Oil slpill in Marsaxlokk

The Portuguese Maritime Accident Investigation Office was informed by the Malta port authorities that the 'CMA CGM Vela' caused an oil spill in the port of Marsaxlokk on Oct 3, 2020, which resulted in a pollution on the vessel's upper deck, on the pier, and the port waters. The Portuguese maritime investigation office has started to collect evidence of the incident. The ship left port on Oct 4 at 150 p.m., headed to Beirut, where it arrived on Oct 7.

DS LOTUS 8,600-TEU container ship kept off Singapore for more than a week, to fight fire

Container ship DS LOTUS suffered fire on board, understood in containers, which started probably, as early as on Oct 6, when the ship was approaching Singapore en route from China. The ship turned back and was cruising back and forth outside Singapore Strait and Singapore Port boundaries, until Oct 11. On Oct 11 she moved to Singapore Raffles Anchorage and was anchored there, while fire fighting was still continuing. She was allowed to berth at Singapore container terminal on Oct 15, understood after fire was extinguished, and she was found to be safe.

Star Gina 2GR Master medevaced in Bali

The 'Star Gina 2GR' on Oct 13, 2020, interrupted the voyage from Tang Shan to Port Hedland while transiting the Lombok Strait, and moored at the southern Bali island anchorage, requesting immediate medical assistance. The master of the ship had lost conscience. He was medevaced by SAR team on a RHIB, and transferred to hospital. The ship remained anchored in pos. 08° 46.87' S 115° 16.47' E as of Oct 15.

Shun An 66 Two dead, four missing after shipwreck

The 'Shun An 66' issued a distress signal on Oct 13, 2020, at 6 p.m. in the Hainan Strait, being in imminent danger of capsizing, and requested assistance. SAR vessels and ships in the area responded. The ship capsized and sank soon after issuing the distress call. Four crew managed to get to a lifeboat, and later were picked up. Six crew members were missing. Two people were spotted in the water and recovered dead, both identified as  crew members. The other four crew members remained missing.

Morandi Crew member died on board

The 'Morandi' had to interrupt the voyage from Yuznhiy  to Lanshan on Oct 13, 2020, and called at Bandar Aceh to transfer the body of a deceased 48-years old Filipino crew member to shore. He had been suffering acute abdomen pain and a heart attack prior to his death. The body was taken to amorgue at Bandar Aceh, the bulk carrier resumed the voyage same day with an ETA as of Oct 22.

Apollo Plans to sink ferry in peril

The 'Apollo' returns to haunt the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) and the government. The plan to sink the ship and turn it into an artificial reef in the St. Lawrence is in peril. The nonprofit company behind the idea is no longer able to afford the bills that could still be in the millions of dollars.
Since its purchase in 2019, the ferry has already cost the STQ more than $ 5.5 million. Of this amount, $ 2 million was paid in the fall of 2019 to the Société Apollo de Godbout to support the work to sink the ship dating from 1970 in the bay of Godbout. The STQ sold it for $ 1.
Actually there is more or less $ 180,000 in the possession of the Apollo Company which is insufficient to ensure the rest of the work or even to move the ship from the port of Quebec. They started with $ 1.7M and we have 30% of the work done. They expected a bill of $ 2.5 million. Various discoveries during the work to prepare it for sinking, like asbestos, made the bill jump. The vessel had been purchased without inspection by the STQ from Labrador Marine, in 2019. They contacted the Ministry of the Economy for financial assistance and requested a quote from another company to finish the work as well as a price to dismantle the entire ship.
On the side of the Ocean Group, which had been commissioned to carry out the work, it was feared that the ship would sink if it is not maintained this winter due to its condition. The management claimed to have had discussions with the STQ, the Apollo Company, the Coast Guard and Transport Canada. In January, the Apollo Company gave the green light to the Ocean Group. The work was halted in May due to a lack of funds.

Vega Dream Corona infected ship enroute to Philippines

The 'Vega Dream' has set sail for the Philippines after leaving its anchorage off WA's Pilbara coast.
A's Heath Department said the bulk carrier was given clearance to depart in the night of Oct 14 by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
A total of seven crew members from the vessel, which was anchored 22 nautical miles off the state's coast, had tested positive for COVID-19. Some of the ship's crew had direct contact with BHP's day shift employees after it docked in Port Hedland.

GEO SEARCHER Crew of sunken ship returned home

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) concluded the biggest sea rescue mission in SA in over a decade. The 60 crew members of the 'Geo Searcher', 47 of whom were South African citizens, arrived in Cape Town on Oct 26 at the end of a more than 3,000-mile journey. Everyone was reported to be healthy and in good spirits, although two individuals had suffered minor injuries during the evacuation of the ship to Gough Island in the South Atlantic which had struck a rock and began sinking at the stern on Oct 15. The 62 crew members evacuated in life rafts and the ship’s small boats taking shelter at a weather station on Gough Island.
SAMSA through its Sea Watch and Rescue operation at the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town received the distress calls from the Geo Searcher. They coordinated the rescue operations with various state departments, including the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF), owners of the 'SA Agulhas II', which disembarked a group of passengers that were on board from a research mission and departed Cape Town late on Oct 15 to undertake the rescue. Captain Knowledge Bengu encountered heavy seas and winds delaying their arrival at the remote island. It took the 'SA Agulhas II' four days to reach Gough Island. When it reached the island on Oct 20, the weather was unfavourable to conduct any flight operations, and it was decided to call off the operation for the day. The following day, as soon as there was a weather opening, the airlift began from Gough despite continuing challenges with the weather. It had been determined that the seas were too rough to transfer the crew by boat from the island. The airlift required more than two hours to complete.
In addition to rescuing the stranded seafarers, the 'SA Agulhas II' also conducted an environmental inspection for oil spillage around the wrecksite before departing the area. They proceeded to Tristan da Cunha for a brief stop, where two residents from the rescued crew were returned home.
After a four-day voyage to return to Cape Town, the 'SA Agulhas II' with the remaining 60 rescued seafarers berthed at Eastern Mole 1 at the port of Cape Town on the evening of Oct 26. After being cleared immigration and health inspections, the seafarers disembarked.

GEO SEARCHER Sinking ship abandoned

The 62 crew members of the 'Geo Searcher' had to abandoned ship on Oct 15, 2020, at 10.30 p.m. about one mile off the northern coast of Gogh island. The vessel was engaged in research work in the island waters when it struck a rock off the island in the morning and began taking on water in the engine room. The vessel subsequently sank in the afternoon.
SA manages a research station on Gough Island, which is only 11 km long with an area of 91km². The seafarers managed to climb into lifeboats and other on-board small craft before making their way from the northern point of the island around to the southern region close to the SA research station.
They were assisted ashore and are all reported to be accounted for. It has been reported that one seafarer sustained some minor injuries. The South African research vessel 'SA Agulhas II' has been dispatched to collect the seafarers, and is expected to reach Gough Island on Oct 19.

Asi Technical failure in Tuapse

The 'Asi' suffered a technical failure at Tuapse on Oct 14, 2020. The vessel's departure permission has temporarily been cancelled by the Harbour Master until the completion of repairs. The ship left the port again after an inspection on Oct 16 at 12.20 a.m., next headed to Samsun with an ETA as of Oct 17.

Yeni Ahmet Kaptan Allision in Izmit

The 'Yeni Ahmet Kaptan' allided with the quay of the Izmit ferry terminal ramp and concrete blocks due to adverse weather conditions on Oct 14, 2020. The ferry ramp and hull plating suffered structural damages. Damages were also found on the ferry terminal concrete station. No pollution or injuries were reported. An incident investigation file has been opened by the Harbour Master.

Westbank Fouled propeller off Peterhead

The 'Westbank' suffered a fouled propelleron Oct 14, 2020, at 5.15 p.m. in position 59 06 52.0 N, 000 39 59.0W, 58 miles east of Stronsay, Orkney. Another fishing vessel, the 'Spjeringen', assisted and took the vessel in tow to Peterhead. On Oct 16 at 8 a.m. the trawler arrived in Peterhead, awaiting access to slip.

Queen Helena Blackout in Fujairah

The Queen Helena' suffered a complete blackout at the Fujairah Anchorage area A in position 25 17 31 N, 056 31 12 E, on Oct 6 at 3 p.m.. All vessels in the vicinity of this position were asked to proceed with caution and keep at least 0,5 nautical miles clearance from the tanker until further notice.

Detained ship to be auctioned

The 'Queen Helena', which has been under arrest at Fujairah Anchorage since Apr 23, 2019, due to unpaid credits and was arrested by the local court, will be sold at a Judicial auction at Fujairah  on Oct 22, 2020. The vessel remained stationary at Fujairah Anchorage in pos. 25° 17.53' N 056° 31.20' E.

LOS NIETOS Medevac off Baffin Bay

The US Coast Guard medevaced a 58-year-old cre member from the 'Los Nietos' 15 miles off Baffin Bay, Texas, in the evening of Cot 15, 2020. The Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi received a report at 8:30 p.m. from the vessel, stating a crewmember had suffered a head injury.
A Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew launched to assist. The Dolphin crew arrived on scene, hoisted the injured crewmember, and transported him to Corpus Christi Medical Center – Bay Area in stable condition.

FSO NABARIMA ENI got permission to offload crude from troubled FSO

The USA granted the Italian-based multinational oil company ENI permission to begin offloading crude oil from the FSO 'Nabarima' without breaking international sanctions on Venezuela. The vessel which carried almost 1.3 million barrels of crude oil was in danger of causing an environmental disaster after it was highlighted that it was listing. ENI will also be able to repair the vessel as permission for such was received on Oct 29. The company was currently awaiting permission from Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), the Venezuelan state-owned oil company, before engaging in the process. Earlierin October, a TT delegation also conducted an assessment of the FSO Nabarima to determine the severity of the matter and reported that the ship was in stable condition, but there remained concerns over the lengthy period to remove the crude oil from the vessel. On October 22, the Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Franklin Khan, stated that a recommendation of the TT team was to speed up the process of the offloading procedure to minimise any additional risks.
ENI was on standby to conduct the ship-to-ship transfers using “state-of-the-art solutions” upon confirmation from the US that this process would be in line with the international sanctions' regime. ENI have also confirmed that a crude tanker, the 'Delta Captain', which is currently in the Caribbean Sea, had been chartered by ENI to serve the recovery plan agreed with PDVSA. Over the past two months the vessel has never entered Venezuelan waters and is currently in international waters.

FSO found safe during inspection

The 'Nabarima' was no longer posing a major environmental risk, said Trinidad and Tobago’s government on Oct 21.Observations made by a team of experts who visited the FSO showed no visible tilt or water ingress within the vessel. The team was not allowed to take photos or videos of the event. The Venezuelan representatives who accompanied the Trinidadian experts who inspected the vessel took photos, which they will request.
The team — which consisted of senior petroleum engineer Craig Boodoo, Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard officer Lt Warner and port state inspector of the Maritime Services Division, Michael Daniel— was taken on a fly-around of the vessel but that they observed no visible tilt.
The team also inspected other areas of the vessel, including the control room, boiler room, pumps and bilge tanks and noticed no water ingress. The tour lasted about three hours. Their report indicated that everything seemed to have been fine. There was no evidence of water ingress of water presence. Two generators were operational, one was on standby…all systems appeared to be functional. The double hull was intact. The representatives were open about the incidents which took place in September which have since been rectified. They also showed their oil spill response plan which was deemed satisfactory. Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela both share an oil spill contingency plan which could be invoked by either party if there was imminent danger. The tanker 'Icaro' was due to offload the crude, which would most likely be transferred to Venezuela. The offloading of the 'Nabarima'’s 1.3 million barrels of oil would take between 30-35 days. The transfer process that was currently taking place, albeit slow, was considered very safe.
There has been much diplomatic activity behind the scenes, with constant communication between both nations. A follow-up visit was requested to monitor the transfer as operations continue.

The 'Icaro', a tanker operated by the Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), a Venezuelan state oil company, approached the 'Nabarima' on Oct 20 at 2.37 p.m, where it was expected to receive a shipment of the stored oil amid environmental concerns. The PDVSA planned to offload some of the oil on board via a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer involving the 'Icaro'. The Venezuelan barge 'Inmaculada' must also participate in the STS operation, which presents its own risks.

Methane Princess Pirates took two crew members hostage - one fled

The 'Methane Princess' was attacked and boarded by pirates on Oct 17, 2020, in the Gulf of Guinea, shortly after it had finished loading the LNG tanks. The alarm went off and most crew members managed to reach safety in the ship's citadel, but two did not make it and were taken hostage by the pirates. However, one of them managed to jump into the sea from the pirate ship. He was rescued but had sustained injuries. Several vessels from Equatorial Guinea's fleet were on the scene after 35-45 minutes, but it was not possible to find out in which direction the pirate vessel had sailed.

VTB STAR Grounding off Ba Don

On Oct 17, 2020, at 3.30 a.m. the 'VTB Star' dragged anchor and drifted aground at the beach near the town Ba Don in the Quang Binh Province of the Gulf of Tonkin. No damages were so far reported. The ship was sailing in ballast, bound to Sonduong Hatinh, and got stuck in pos. 17° 45.85' N 106° 27.75' E approximately 30 metres from the coast of Quang Tho ward. The Gianh Port Border Guard Station and Quang Binh Border Guards were unable to dispatch vessels to assist the stranded vessel due to bad weather conditions. Local authorities have reminded the crew and the shipping company to take measures to prevent any oil leak.

Mississagi Grounding off Kingsville

The ship was listing to port side. It was refloated in the morning of Oct 18 with the help of a tug and taken to Bakauheni anchorage. It was to be inspected on Oct 19 for possible damages.

Maa Fuel removal nearly completed

The removal of oil from the 'Maa' and was likely to come to an end by Nov 1. The Visakhapatnam-based Gill Marines, a company that has been entrusted with the operation of removing all forms of oils in the first phase of the salvage operation, has already removed 1.05 tons of oil as of Oct 31. The operation started about a week ago, and 15 tons were remaining. Four high-power pumps were used with external diesel generator support, and the oil was pumped into 10 tankers through a pipeline. Once all the oil is pumped out, the salvors will take up the beach cleaning operation along with the Indian Coast Guard. The threat of oil spill is now mitigated and the second phase to refloat the ship can commence. The Protection and Indemnity Club which is responsible for overseeing the operation on behalf of the owners of the ship, has appointed the company Resolve Marine to take up the salvage operation.

More oil in tanks than expected

The transfer of the fuel from the 'MAa was in progress as of Oct 28, and the task was expected to take a couple of days further. The Gill Marine found that the fuel quantity left in the vessel was more than what they expected initially. Instead of draing 50 tons, they already siphoned 70 tons, and 10 tons more were remaining in the tanks which were to be cleared within two days. Once the fuel tanks have been emptied, the ship will be thorough scanned to check the possibility of any leakage before initiating the refloating operation. It would take at least 20 to 30 days for this work to commence. Since the ship's anchor chains were parted while it was drifting ashore, VPT officials expected a part of the ship would have suffered damage. After a detailed analysis on the magnitude of the damage, the slavage will begin by considering every measure to prevent any further damage to the ship. Discussions were on with a Mumbai-based company to take up the task which, once started, was expected to take 2-3 days.

Resolve Marine tasked with refloating ops

The owners of the 'Maa' have contracted the Resolve Marine Pvt Ltd. to carry out the salvage operations and to refloat the vessel near Visakhapatnam. The salvage operations can be initiated only after the removal of oil from the vessel to avoid any risk of pollution. No water ingress or oil pollution has been reported so far. The vessel owner's Protection and Indemnity Club has appointed the MS Gill Marine to remove the fuel from the tanks. The Gill Marine has obtained permission from various government authorities to take up the work. Since there was no road access to the site of the grounded vessel, a temporary road was laid by the vendor to mobilize men and material. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) also has mobilized its own oil spill response equipment with a dedicated team to the site to cater to any untoward oil pollution around the vessel. It may take two to three days to transfer the oil from the grounded ship to shore. The vessel had 41 tons of oil and nine tons of diesel on board. The 15 Bangladeshi crew members were still on board. The Gill Marine has provided a generator to the vessel. Another agency was supplying food, water, and other essential goods to the crew.

The Coast Guard requested the launch of the Kirkwall RNLI lifeboat and tasked the Sanday Coastguard rescue team. Subsequently, the 'Queline' managed to free itself from the rock with own power and headed to the Kettletoft Pier, Sanday. The lifeboat was stood-down while the trawler was en route to port. The Sanday Coastguard Rescue Team met the trawler upon its arrival.

As a result of the inspection, undeclared, illegal cigarettes in 3.150.000 packages and tobacco in bulk of 38.500 kilograms were found in the cargo holds at Haydarpasa. A legal investigation file has been placed by Public Prosecutor. A crew statement was to be collected at court. The vessel's departure permission was cancelled by the Harbour Master until the completion of further investigations and remained stationary as of Oct 18.

On Oct 17, 2020 at 11:36 a.m., the CROSS Jobourg was alerted by the Guernsey Coast Guard after a crew member of the 'Maersk Gairloch' had fallen ill. The ship was 14 miles off Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (50). The captain of the 'Maersk Gailorch' informed the CROSS that he had already had a medical teleconsultation with the Telemedical Maritime Assistance Service (TMAS) of Cuxhaven who recommended a medical evacuation. The CROSS then initiated a conference call with the maritime medical consultation center in Toulouse and the maritime medical coordination service in Le Havre, and the need of a medical evacuation was confirmed. The CROSS tasked a Caiman helicopter of the French Navy base in Maupertus with a medical team from the medical center of the army health service in Querqueville on board to carry out the evacuation.
At 1:20 p.m., the medical team was dropped off aboard the 'Maersk Gairloch' where they performed first aid and conditioning the patient. He was hoisted by the helicopter and then dropped off in Cherbourg at 1:51 p.m. An ambulance transferred the patient to the CHU de Cherbourg for further care.

GARONNE Several migrants rescued, at least four drowned off Calais

In the morning of Oct 27, 2020, the CROSS Gris-Nez was informed by the crew of the s/y 'Marbuzet' of the presence of a migrant boat with about 20 persons on board in difficulty in the Dunkirk channel.
Immediately the CROSS engaged numerous civil and military resources in the area to provide them assistance:
- the nearby fishing vessel 'Meuchik';
- the pilot boat of Dunkirk;
- the lifeboat 'Notre Dame des Flandres' of the SNSM in Gravelines;
- the BSAM 'Garonne' of the French Navy;
- the customs patrol boat 'Jacques Oudart Fourmentin'
- a Caiman helicopter of the Belgian Air Force.
The BSAM 'Garonne' as well as the 'Jacques Oudart Fourmentin' recover some of the shipwrecked at sea in the area, as well as the pilot boat from Dunkirk. The castaways were dropped off at the port of Dunkirk-Ouest and taken care of by the fire brigade and the mobile emergency and resuscitation service. Finally, one castaway, isolated due to particularly difficult weather conditions at sea, was spotted then picked up by the Caiman helicopter of the Belgian Air Force and evacuated to Calais hospital. Four migrants, among them two children, were recovered dead. One more person was still missing.
The maritime prefect of the Channel and the North Sea stopped the SAR operation at 6:00 p.m., due to nightfall and lack of new findings.

On Oct 17, 2020, the CROSS Gris-Nez was alerted by the ferry 'Spirit of France' that a makeshift migrant boat, made up of two kayaks stowed together, was in difficulty eight miles north-east of Calais. The CROSS tasked the 'Garonne' which was on patrol in the area, to provide assistance. The 'Garonne' took care of the six castaways and their boat. They were brought back to the port of Calais where they were taken care of by the border police at 4:25 p.m.

On Oct 17, 2020, the CROSS Gris-Nez received a call from the oceanographic vessel 'Thalassa' reporting a migrant boat in difficulty 12 nautical miles southwest of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The CROSS asked the 'Thalassa' to remain on standby and immediately tasked the 'Abeille-Languedoc' to provide assistance. The tug took charge of the 16 migrants (including a woman) and their boat. The castaways were brought back to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer where they were taken care of by the border police at 10:41 pm.

The Port Authority of Myrina was informed on Oct 17 at noon, that during the loading of vehicles and the boarding of passengers on the 'Blue Star Myconos' in the port of Mytilene, a 68-year-old man was injured after falling aboard the ship.The man was given first aid by the ship's doctor. It was not required to take him to hospital for further examinations. A preliminary investigation was carried out by the Port Authority of Myrina.

One day after securing a government bailout, the cash-strapped Chinese domestic liner operator Antong Holdings has begun selling assets to raise cash. On Oct 15, 2020, Antong’s administrators announced that from Oct 22-23, all the assets of the group’s wholly owned subsidiary, Guangxi Changrong Shipping, will be auctioned on Chinese e-commerce site Taobao.
Guangxi Changrong is the vessel-owning vehicle for the 'Chang Rong 6', with bids starting from CNY43.34 million (US$6.45 million). She has a current market value of US$5.08 million. In May, Guangxi Changrong had sold or transferred ownership of a sister ship, the 'Shang Hang 1' (ex Guang Rong 5), to Zhaoshang Antong Logistics. The latter company was incorporated in September 2019 and is owned by China Merchants Port Holdings (40%), Quanzhou Antong IoT (40%), another Antong subsidiary, and Shandong Xincheng Hengye Group (10%), which is owned by the Qingdao municipal authorities. On Oct 14 , Antong, which operates a liner service through subsidiary, Quanzhou Ansheng Shipping, announced to the Shanghai Stock Exchange that administrators had signed a restructuring agreement with a government-led joint venture to bail out the group. The JV, Fujian China Merchants Ports Logistics Management Partnership was incorporated on 4 September and is owned by China Merchants Port Holdings (44.44%), AVIC Trust (33.33%) and Quanzhou Jiaofa Real Estate Investment (22.22%).

COUPER TIDE Tug rescued 30 castaways

The maritime controllers of the CNCS of Salvamento Marítimo in Madrid have coordinated the rescue of the 30 crew members of the Donostian freezer trawler 'Figaro' (IMO: 8905725) 12 miles off the Angolan coast. The blazting vessel was drifting 23 miles north of Lobito on Oct 18, 2020. The crew fled into four life rafts wand were rescued by the 'Couper Tide' which sailed from Luanda on Oct 17 at 5 p.m. and headed to the scene. One they were safely aboard the tug, the castaways were transported to the port of Lobito on Oct 19 at 4 p.m.

TAIAN NO.2 Tanker caused oil spill

While operating in the port of Taichung, Taiwan, the 'Taian No. 2' was pushed by a wind gust onto the corner of a pier on Oct 19, 2020, at midday. The tanker was moving from Pier 99 to Pier 2 when it lost control due to the strong winds. The starboard side of the stern contacted the corners of Piers 29 and 30. The impact cracked the oil tank in the stern section, causing a large amount of fuel oil to leak into the sea. The personnel of the Taichung branch of the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) urgently placed oil booms around the vessel to contain the spill. TIPC's Taichung personnel set up a response centre to co-operate with Taichung's Environmental Protection Bureau, the Maritime and Port Bureau, and the Coastguard to deal with the oil spill. Fuel cords were placed around the vessel to intercept the leaking oil, and oil-absorbing cotton was used to remove the pollution. The Taiwanese oil refinery CPC Corporation also sent two tank trucks to the scene to speed up the removal of leaked oil, and the oil pollution was brought under control in the run of Oct 19.

Raja 4 Salvage completed

The salvage the 'Raja 4' off Koh Samui island has been completed on Oct 18. The Raja Ferry Plc hired MS Service Co to raise the ferry. The company used two large crane vessels to lift the wreck to the surface. The ferry was then turned on even keel, and the water was pumped out. The wreck was towed to the boat pier on Koh Samui island. The Marine and Coastal Resources Department sent officials to monitor the salvage operation. 20 blocks of garbage that broke away were retrieved without causing damage to marine or coastal resources in the area.

KMP.NUSA JAYA ABADI Ferry lost rudder in grounding

The KMP 'Nusa Jaya Abadi', which had just finished a routine maintance on Oct 8, 2020, was damaged on Oct 19, 2020. The rudder of the ship broke after hitting the breakwater prior to docking at the Nusa Penida Pier on Oct 17. The crossings to Nusa Penida and vice versa had to be cancelled. The accident happened to the low tide and strong water currents. When the ferry was about to turn towards the pier, the ship crashed on the rocks, and the steering component broke and fell into the sea. Apart from the rudder, the propeller was also bent. It was planned that the ship will be repaired again at the previous docking location after being towed by another ship to Surabaya. LCT ships were to serve for the transport of goods to Nusa Penida.

On Oct 19, 2020 at 3:08 a.m., the CROSS Jobourg was alerted by the 'John Camille' after one of its crew members had injured his hand. The ship was 13 nautical miles north of Port-en-Bessin. The CROSS then initiated a conference call with the Toulouse Maritime Medical Consultation Center and the vessel, in which a medical evacuation of the fisherman was recommended. The CROSS immediately tasked a Caiman helicopter of the French Navy base in Maupertus to carry out the evacuation. The CROSS also initiated a second conference with the CCMM and the maritime medical coordination service of Le Havre, which advocated the medical evacuation to the Jacques Monod hospital in Le Havre. At 4:30 a.m., the injured fisherman was hoisted to safety aboard thehelicopter and then dropped off at the Jacques Monod hospital where he was taken care of by the medical service at 4:51 a.m.

COSTA DIADEMA Second cruise ended early

Seven passengers of the 'Costa Diadema' disembarked on Oct 10 during the second cruise following the shutdown to explore Palermo. Later it turned out, the passengers were infected with Corona. All guests were tested and had to be negative to go on board. They were isolated and immediately taken off board in special facilities on land in Palermo in consultation with the Italian health authorities in accordance with the protocol. Then the journey continued as usual. Nevertheless, contacts on the cruise ship were followed up in order to find further possible infected people. Then it turned out that another person was infected and had symptoms. The company decided to end the cruise trip early on Oct 15 and cancelled the third scheduled one too.

ARANUI 5 Corona case on combi ship

On Oct 18, 2020, the municipality of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas Islands reported that one crew member had tested positive for Covid-19 on board the 'Aranui 5'. The man was placed under observation and in isolation with two other contact cases before all were disembarked on Hiva Oa at the request of the health surveillance office. They will remain under observation ashore, in particular so as not to risk infecting other people on board the ship.
The freight crew was not in contact with the passengers. Thus, the ship's personnel was able to unload the cargoon Oct 18 without posing a risk to the population.

ZAPOLYARYE Auction to be finalized

The ;otril Port Authority will meet the board of directors to finalize the abandonment file of the 'Zapolyarye' and draw up the specifications for the public auction. A dozen companies are interested in buying the ship which has been abandoned in the port of Motril with the crew on board for two years after the bankruptcy of the MSCO shipping company, the owner of the ship.
The court authorized the sale of the ship in November 2019, however a judicial process - already resolved in favour of the port - paralyzed the auction of the freighter and, when the procedures to launch the tender could be resumed, the outbreak of the corona crisis delayed the procedure again. As of Oct 27, 2020 the date set for the council to meet, the specifications will be launched for companies opting to purchase the freighter, valued at 3.18 million Euros. A dozen of them have already been interested in the acquisition.
The ship is kept with a minimum crew of seven Russian sailors, after some of the crew decided to abandon it. The shipping company delayed the payment of their wages and they remained in the dark for a long time. In the time the freighter has been docked at the dock, it has incurred a debt of more than one million Euros with the port. Once the ship is sold, the money will be used to defray the costs it has incurred for the port and the rest will become part of the public treasury. The shipping company will be in charge of repatriating the crew. At the moment, there were no claims from the maritime workers union, so the sailors were collecting their wages.

The 'Canrival Sensation' jumped into action to rescue 24 people from a sinking boat after the crew spotted the boat struggling in international waters 37 miles off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida on Oct 17, 2020. The 'Carnival Sensation' is one of hundreds of cruise ships currently operating with no passengers and a skeletal crew, in the wake of the Covid-19 shutdown of the cruise industry. The ship went to the aid of the sinking boat, providing supplies including blankets, life jackets, food and water to the migrants on board. They were brought on board the 'Carnival Sensation'. Once on board,the 'Carnival Sensation''s medical team looked over the boat people and ensured they were quarantined away from crew members.
The migrants of various nationalities and including two children were later taken to shore by the US Coast Guard.

AL MESSILAH Two left Al Messilah before coronavirus outbreak was revealed

The WA Premier has conceded he has known since the weekend that two Australians were allowed to disembarkfrom the 'Al Messilah' at Fremantle before a COVID-19 outbreak was detected on board. A vet from Sydney and a stock manager from Busselton in WA's South West had been on the livestock carrier for up to eight months when it docked at Fremantle last week. The pair disembarked the ship and were allowed to go home to quarantine before 25 cases of COVID-19 on board were discovered. When the ship berthed in accordance with existing protocols, they got off and went back to where they were from to quarantine. The ship itself had not at that point in time recorded or reported any COVID and obviously had been at sea for a long period of time.
The revelation came as 36 crew members from the 'Al Messilah', including the additional 24 who tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct 19, were taken off the vessel and moved to hotel quarantine in Perth.

QUEEN OF ALBERNI 200 passengers stuck off Tsawassen

On Oct 27 the nearly 200 passengers of the 'Queen of Alberni' have been stuck on board the ferry just outside of the Tsawwassen terminal since 2:45 p.m. after the ferry experienced a problem with the gear box. Docking had to be aborted off the terminal. The arrival of a tug boat took so much time because it was busy with another job. The passengers were stuck on board until about 7 p.m. The sailings on the 'Queen of Alberni' between Tsawwassen and Duke Pointhave been cancelled for the rest of the day due to the mechanical issue. Customers with reservations who had not yet checked in were advised of the cancellation and will have their reservation fees refunded. Those customers who have already checked in were accommodated on the next available sailing.

Ferry suffered mechanical trouble

The BC Ferries has announced a revised schedule for Oct 19, 2020, after the 'Queen of Alberni' experienced mechanical difficulties. The 'Queen of Alberni' was having problems with its controllable pitch propeller and has been removed from service.. The 'Coastal Celebration' was now operating between both Victoria and Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen and Nanaimo. She will operate on the below schedule:
Swartz Bay (Victoria) – Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
- 8:00 am departing Swartz Bay
Tsawwassen (Vancouver) – Duke Point (Nanaimo)
- 10:15 am departing Tsawwassen
- 12:45 pm departing Duke Point
- 3:15 pm departing Tsawwassen
- 5:45 pm departing Duke Point

The 'Spirit of Vancouver Island' and 'Spirit of British Columbia' will continue as the primary vessels between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay and operated as scheduled.
B.C. Ferries has cancelled some sailings on Oct 19 as well on routes between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen and Duke Point and Tsawwassen due to the ongoing mechanical issue with the vessel.

MSC MIA SUMMER Injured crew member medevaced off Larnaca

A crew member of the 'MSC Mia Summer', which was sailing 120 nautical miles off the coast of Larnaca enroute from Port Said to Constanta, was hoisted in the afternoon of Oct 18, 2020, after the Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) dispatched a helicopter. The crew aboard the vessel sent a message to shore requiring immediate medical assistance. Once it received the call for help, the JRCC activated the Nearchos national search and rescue plan and dispatched a special police aircraft with a doctor on board.
The injured crew member was transported to Larnaca general hospital, where he arrived at 6.20 p.m.

The 'Ken Rei' has docked at Napier Port on Oct 27 after its crew of 21 completed 14 days in isolation. They were close contacts of an engineer who tested positive after spending time on the logging ship when it was berthed in New Plymouth. The vessel had been off the Napier coast for a fortnight and the crew have tested negative. It berthed at 6 a.m. at the Higgins & Geddis Wharves and was expected to depart on Oct 29.

Doctors to be dropped off on bulk carrier for testings

A team of doctors was to be helicoptered to the 'Ken Rei' off the coast of Napier to do Covid-19 swab tests. One of the Auckland port workers who has tested positive for the virus worked on the vessel in the past fortnight. That led Napier Port to refuse entry to the vessel and requested it to remain offshore for a 14-day isolation period. Now the ship's charter company has contracted doctors from a Napier medical centre to collect swabs from the crew. Preparation for the flight and safety protocols had been worked out over the last two days. Weather permitting, a helicopter would fly out to the ship on Oct 22.

MSC Grandiosa Passengers not allowed to go on shore due to COVID 19 suspicion

The 'MSC Grandiosa' docked at Valletta Cruise Port in the morning of Oct 16, 2020, but was not allowed to disembark passengers by the health authoirties after a suspected case of COVID-19 on board. The Maltese health authorities did not grant permission for passengers to be able to come on shore, and the ship left Valletta port. Enroute to Malta from Palermo, the ship's captain had notified the Maltese authorities of a suspected COVID-19 case on board. The case has not been confirmed yet because further tests were being done. The cruise ship was not given clearance to disembark its passengers by the Maltese health authorities. It was allowed to dock in Malta on what is a technical stop to take on supplies and continued with its voyage. The ship left Palermo on Oct 14. On Oct 18 it docked in Genova.

IVS MERLION Historical Covid-19 case being investigated

The NZ Ministry of Health was investigating a suspected historical case of COVID-19 of a crew member of the 'IVS Merlion' at the Port of Tauranga. The person returned a weak positive test with a high CT value, whichindicated an old infection. It appeared most likely that the crew member had COVID-19 some time ago and was no longer infectious. The 'IVS Merlion' arrived at Tauranga on Oct 15, 2020, after departing Indonesia on Sep 24. The infection has not been passed on to any other crew member - they have all tested negative and have been on board the vessel for three weeks.

SA Agulhas II Research vessel on rescue mission

The 'SA Agulhas II' arrived at Gough Island on Oct 20, 2020, at 12.40 p.m. SA Time after departing Cape Town on Oct 17. The vessel was sent to the island to bring the crew of the research vessel 'Geo Searcher' back to South Africa which had sunk last week. With the weather conditions unfavourable for any boat work to transfer survivors from the island to the vessel, it was decided that all transfers would have to be conducted by helicopter as it would present less risk in the prevailing weather conditions.
The first flight departed the vessel at 3.15 p.m., however it could not land and had to return back to the vessel due to strong winds gusting up to 40 knots. The operation will resume once weather conditions improve.
The current plan is to embark all 62 crew members on the 'SA Agulhas II' before heading to Tristan da Cunha to drop the two Tristanian survivors from where the vessel will then proceed to Cape Town.
The arrival in Cape Town will be dependent on when the crew can be all safely embarked on the vessel along with weather conditions that may affect the sailing time. All indications are that it will take approximately 4 to 5 days before the vessel arrives in Cape Town.

COLOR FANTASY Ferry laid up due to corona crisis

Color Line has decided to reduce the capacity on the Oslo-Kiel route and will lay up the 'Color Fantasy' until the corona infection situation and the authorities' travel restrictions have changed. This means that Color Line was sending another 400 employees home. The reduced timetable will be introduced from Nov 4, when the 'Color Magic' will sail on the route in an adapted timetable with goods and passengers. Passengers can only buy a return ticket from Oslo without the possibility of going ashore in Kiel.
"Unfortunately, the reduction in capacity is once again necessary, and it is crucial that the government and the Storting come up with compensation schemes both in the autumn and next year," said the CEO Trond Kleivdal of Color Line.
A total of 1,000 employees of the Color Line have now been sent home, while a further 300 employees have resigned, mainly through voluntary schemes. Fjord Line announced that the routes Bergen-Hirtshals and Langesund-Hirtshals will be closed down for the rest of the year.

KINGFISHER D Master died off Lavrio

In the evening of Oct 18,, 2020, the crew of 22 of the 'Kingfisher D' requested medical assistance after the 47-year old Master of the ship, had lost conscience upon the arrival of the vessel at Lavrio anchorage, coming from Bejaia. The Master was medevaced, but was found to be dead on arrival ashore. The cause of the death was thought to have been a heart attack or a stroke. The Central Port Authority of Lavrio, which was conducting the preliminary investigation, ordered an autopsy - necropsy at the Forensic Medicine Service of Piraeus, while the departure of the ship was prohibited as it did not cover its minimum safe crew strength. As of Oct 20, the bulk carrier remained anchored off Lavrio.

Lily E Ship left Waterford after repairs

Repairs on the 'Lily E' have been completed on Oct 28. The vessel had suffered damage to the electrical control panel, but no structural damage has been reported. Seawater entered the vent in the control room and poured onto the electrical control panel, resulting in a short circuit.A part of the cargo has been discharged and moved by road to its destination on Oct 24. The remaining cargo was discharged and moved on Oct 27 and Oct 28. The vessel sailed on Oct 28, bound for Aveiro with an ETA as of Nov 1.

The 'Lily E' has been towed back to Waterford Port at Belview in the afternoon of Oct 21. The ship had drifted dangerously close to a rocky shore at Hook Head and was taken to Waterford Port under tow by the tug 'Tramontane' which was assisted by the tug 'Bargarth'.
The ship will be inspected by Department of Transport Marine Survey Office personnel and it is understood the all nine crew members were said to be well. They had raised the alarm on Oct 20 at 3 p.m. after the vessel lost power about two nautical miles from Hook Head, County Wexford. RNLI boats from Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and Rosslare were launched, as well as the R117 helicopter based at Waterford Airport.
The lifeboat crews had to contend with force eight winds and six-metre high waves. While they were waiting for the tug to arrive, they had to stop the vessel ending up on the rocks at Hook Head. Two boats  made an attempt to initiate a tow, but the first couple of attempts failed.

Lily E disabled off Waterford

In the morning of Oct 20, 2020, the 'Lily E', enroute from Szczecin with a cargo of coal and a crew of nine on board, lost power n bad weather conditions off the coast of Waterford while approaching its port of destination, New Ross, and drifted southwards. At midday she drifted in northern direction and was two nautical miles south of Hook Head. Three RNLI lifeboats were called to assist at 2.45 p.m., the lifeboat 14-17 (MMSI: 232002410), 16-18 (MMSI: 235050725) and 17-43 (MMSI: 235010875) from Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and Rosslare. Around eight volunteer crew members were on board each lifeboat. They were working in extremely challenging conditions in the afternoon with strong winds and large swells Also the Waterford based Coast Guard helicopter was taking part in the SAR operation.
In force eight conditions, the lifeboats from Dunmore East and Kilmore Quay established tow lines onto the vessel which was then very close to the rocks. The two lifeboats maintained the tow and kept the ship away from shore. The Rosslare RNLI boat stood by.
Battling strong waves over six metres high, the three lifeboat crews worked together to ensure the vessel stayed away from the rocks until the tow was passed to the tug from Waterford – the 'Tramontane' – on its arrival at 5.40 p.m. Escorting the vessels until they reached the calmer waters of Waterford Harbour in the early hours of Oct 21, the lifeboat crews were eventually stood down and returned to station. While the tug made progress towards Waterford harbour there were fears that the tow lines would break so it was decided to drop anchor. About 1,5 hours later the tow line parted, and the vessel would potentially have blocked the navigational channel in the harbour and run aground if the anchor would not have been down. On Oct 21 the salvage operation was continued. The vessel was to be brought to Waterford once the fog had cleared.

CMA CGM JAKARTA Divers insepcting wreck

On Oct 27, divers aprroached the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' to conduct an underwater survey and seal the fuel pipes. There were plans to siphon the 300 tons of oil that were remaining on board, however, it has been hampered, due to rough sea conditions to date.

Grounded ship broke in two after ten days

Asiatrans Vietnam has chartered two vessels of the Tan Cang Offshore Services JSC to investigate the grounding site of the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' near Lang Co Town, Duong Dang Trung, to deploy oil spill monitoring buoys, oil containment booms and absorbent pads. Technicians were hired to carry out a visual inspection and they had yet to detect possible leakages of oil from the vessel while local authorities continued to monitor the area. On Oct 18 the 'CMA CGM Jakarta' broke in two at the eastern coast of Vietnam, where it had grounded in the night, Oct 9, due to strong waves. Both halves were separated 25 meters. Vietnam's Department of Natural Resources and Environment was monitoring the situation regarding possible oil spills as the vessel had approximately 300 tons of oil on board. The Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee has directed the Provincial Border Guard Command to coordinate with the relevant agencies such as the provincial Military Command and Police, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the Department of Industry and Trade, and other local authorities.

CMS CGM Missouri Container ship refloated and sailing again

In the night of Oct 15, the 'CMS CGM Missouri' was successfully refloated at the Great Bitter Lake in the Suez Canal. There were no injuries to the crew and no pollution occurred as a result of the incident. The Suez Canal remained open for traffic following the grounding and the consequent refloating operation. The vessel was moved to a safe anchorage at Great Bitter Lake for a survey and underwater inspection. The vessel's hull integrity was not compromised. The exact cause of the grounding is yet unknown. A full investigation into the incident was conducted. The vessel arrived at Jeddah on Oct 18 at 7 a.m.

Wuchow Robbers stole ship's stores

The 'Wuchow' was boarded by armed robbers, who threatened the bosun with a gun and knife, at the Callao anchorage on Oct 5, 2020, at 09.30 a.m. The bosun was instructed by the Chief Officer to investigate movements on the forecastle, and was subsequently threatened by the robbers. The bosun retreated immediately and raised the alarm. Seeing the alerted crew, the robbers fled the vessel and escaped. The incident was reported to the Callao port control. Following an investigation, it was concluded that the robbers had boarded the vessel using a rope attached to a hook. Ship's stores were reported stolen by the robbers.

SCARPE Migrants rescued off Boulogne and Calais

Obn Oct 23, 2020, the CROSS Gris-Nez was informed that a migrant boat in difficulty off the coast of Calais and deployed the 'Scarpe' as well as the SNSM boat 'Notre Dame de Risban' from Calais to assist. The seven castaways were picked up by the lifeboat and were dropped off at the port of Calais where they were taken care of by the firefighters and the border police. The 'Scarpe' picked up one castaway and dropped him off at the port of Boulogne-Sur-Mer where he was taken care of by the firefighters and the PAF 62.

Patrol boat rescued three distressed migrants

The CROSS Gris-Nez was informed by the crew of the s/y 'Pogolo' on Oct 19, 2020, that a boat was in difficulty south of the upward path of the Strait of Pas-de-Calais. The CROSS again sent the 'Escaut' as well as the VCSM 'Scarpe' to bring them assistance. The 'Escault' took on board three castaways and transported them to Dunkirk where they were taken care of by PAF59 at 2:00 p.m. The 'Scarpe' rescued the three other castaways and their boat and took them to Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they were taken care of by the firefighters of the Pas-de-Calais departmental fire and rescue service as well as by PAF 62 at 4:24 p.m.

Normandie Ferry assisted distressed yacht

On Oct 17, 2020, the 'Normandie' was asked to divert to assess the situation of the 'Almana IV'. At 11:55 a.m. the CROSS Jobourg received a call from a father worried about his daughter and her friend, both of whom had left aboard the 'Almana IV'. The father was monitoring the voyage with a GPS application but had not received a position for two hours then. 20 minutes later, the CROSS broadcast an emergency message. Contact with the girl’s mother was made to get more information about the ship. A new consistent position was received by the GPS application with a sailboat on its way to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
Several attempts to contact it by VHF remained unsuccessful. The previous owner of the sailboat was contacted and reported the telephone number of the second person on board. The attempted call also remained unanswered.
Several merchant ships and the hydrographic vessel 'La Pérouse' of the French Navy, which was in the area, also made VHF calls without success. The search continued throughout the day.
After 6 p.m., while the last GPS positions suggested that the' Almana IV' was adrift, the ferry 'Mont St Michel' reported a sailboat corresponding to the description nine nautical miles behind it. The 'Normandie' , after diverting to the position, in turn spotted the boat and its crew . They were healthy, but reported an engine problem and a water ingress. The boat had to be towed to Fécamp. The towage was carried out by the lifeboat of the local SNSM station which was tasked at 7.40 p.m. In the night of Oct 17 the yacht was safely pulled into the port of Fécamp.

FV ARPEGE Fishing boss sent to prison for bringing a bomb into port

On Oct 6, 2020, Alexis Hagneré, a fishing boss from Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais) was sentenced to ten months in prison and a fine of € 3,000 for bringing back to port an American 250 kg bomb from World War II caught in his trawl on Sep 27, 2019, which he had caught in his net.
The transport code provides that, faced with such a discovery, the captain of a ship alerts the CROSS, a semaphore or the nearest harbour master's office and re-submerges the dangerous device on an offshore drop zone. Instead, the bomb containing some 145 kg of explosive was landed in the port of Hauts-de-France.
A few days later, its defusing by demining divers from the French Navy required the evacuation of the auction quay and some 600 inhabitants of the neighborhood, the confinement of 25,000 people living within a radius of 1,500 meters, the closure of the city center. Nearly 400 police, firefighters and soldiers have been deployed to secure operations.

Oruc Reis with deactivaded AIS off Kastellorizo

The 'Oruc Reis' was sailing 10 miles off the Greek island Kastellorizo on Oct 20. The vessel, which had its AIS transmitter off, was heading northeast and, assuming it continues its course at its current speed, it was expected to reach a point 12 nautical miles off Kastellorizo by noon.
The offshore supply ships 'Ataman' and 'Cengiz Han', which were escorting the 'Oruc Reis', had their transmitters on.
The 'Oruc Reis' has been conducting seismic surveys in the area. The navigational warning (Navtex) issued by Turkey on October 12 expires on Oct 22.
On Oct 19, the Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said in an interview that the 'Oruc Reis' was making 2D seismic surveys” and estimated that it will complete its work in two months. If the ship finds an area with high expectations, Ankara will deploy a drilling ship.

MAERSK HALIFAX Accident investigation report published in deadly fire in 2018

A.P. Moller – Maersk, parent company to the world’s leading shipping line, has responded to the final investigation report into the fatal fire on board the 'Maersk Honam' on March 6, 2018, one of the worst accidents in the history of the company and the container shipping industry at large.
The 'Maersk Honam' - now 'Maersk Halifax' - caught fire while underway in the Arabian Sea towards the Suez Canal. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 7,860 containers, corresponding to 12,416 twenty-foot equivalent units.
Despite the firefighting efforts which included releasing the vessels’ CO2 system into the cargo hold, the first spread uncontrollably for week, encompassing the entire bow from the superstructure forward. Five crew members lost their lives in the incident.
The vessel was eventually towed to Jebel Ali for salvage. It was later cut up and transported to South Korea where it was rebuilt and returned to service August 2019 under the name 'Maersk Halifax'.
The investigation was led by the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) of Singapore, where the vessel was registered. Maersk also conducted its own independent investigation.
The TSIB report was issued on Oct 6, 2020. The investigation identified that the most likely source of the fire was in a block of 54 containers with IMO Class 9 Dangerous Cargo stowed inside cargo hold no. 3 in the forepart of the vessel. However, the actual cause of the fire was not conclusive, rather investigators said it was highly likely to originate from the decomposition of dangerous cargo generating intense heat, enabling the fire to rapidly develop out of control.
As a result of the incident, Maersk introduced new guidelines for stowing dangerous goods on it fleet of vessels. The report included nine safety recommendations, including five to Maersk and four to the flag state.

Rebecca Hammann Restricted manoeuvrability due to a Governor failure

The 'Rebecca Hammann', while enroute from Terneuzen, encountered a restricted manoeuvrability due to a Governor failure in position 56 27 45 N, 002 57 10 W of Aberdeen on Oct 19, 2020. The tugs 'Kittiwake' and 'Collie T' came to assist and brought the vessel alongside to Dundee.

Pride of Hull Ferry towed back to Hull

The 'Pride of Hull' was still anchored off Killingholme on Oct 21. The HM Coastguard had received a call from the Humber Vessel Traffic Service on Oct 20 just before 9 p.m., tating the ferry had lost power and smoke had been found in the engine room. She dropped anchor in the River Humber. On board were 264 passengers and cre. All of them were safe on board, and power remained on the decks. Two tugs were originally sent along with the Humber RNLI lifeboat. One tug remained with the vessel. The Associated British Ports (ABP) continued to liaise with and support the ship and will be assisting in her safe return to the Port of Hull as soon as possible. At 10 p.m. the tugs 'Svitzer Laura', 'Svitzer Stanford' and 'Svitzer Victory' were pulling the ferry back to the port. The ferry was alongside at the River Terminal 1 berth, King George Dock, Hull, at 10.35 p.m. where the cargo was discharged to another P&O ferry.

Fire off Immingham

On Oct 20, 2020, a fire broke out in the engine room of the'Pride of Hull' in the Humber estuary. The ship, which has 264 passengers on board, had departed from Hull at 9.20 p.m. and was on its way to Rotterdam before reporting difficulties as it passed Immingham and lost power after smoke started billowing from the engine room.
The Coastguard was alerted, and the Humber lifeboat has been deployed from Spurn Point. The tugs 'Svitzer Josephine' and 'Svitzer Laura' were also deployed to the ferry which was near North Killingholme Haven as of 11 p.m. On Oct 21 the ferry was still held on the Humber by the 'Svitzer Josephine'. The ferry was to be towed back to Hull when tidal conditions improved.

DEFENDER Medevac off Cold Bay

The US Coast Guard medevaced a man from the 'Defender' on Oct 20, 2020, approximately 100 miles northwest of Cold Bay. Watchstanders in the 17th District command center in Juneau received the request for the medevac from the fishing vessel on Oct 19 at approximately 7 p.m. for a 26 year-old crew member who was experiencing eye and head pain. The 'Defender' was 170 miles from Cold Bay during the initial call for help. Watchstanders directed the launch of the Jayhawk aircrew from the Forward Operating Location Cold Bay and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter 'Alex Haley' as a secondary asset to assist if needed.
The Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the man at 6:55 a.m. and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical services in Cold Bay for further transport to Anchorage. On-scene weather at the time of the rescue was an air temperature of 41 degrees, 20-mph winds and visibility of about 10 miles.

Asuka Maru Grounding on breakwater

On Oct 21, 2020, at 3.30 a.m. LT the 'Asuka Maru', enroute from Tomakomai ran onto the breakwater while entering the port of Toyama, Honshu. The bulbous bow was heavily damaged, breached and dented. The ship was pulled off the breakwater by a tug at 08.30 a.m. No water ingress was reported. The ship was safely berthed in the port of Fushikitoyama.

CONCEPTION Vote on cause of fire expected

Federal authorities were expected to vote on Oct 20, 2020, on the possible cause for the fire on board the 'Conception' on Sep 2, 2019, which killed 34 people off the coast of Southern California. The pre-dawn blaze aboard the passenger vessel led to both criminal and safety investigations. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will vote on their investigation?s findings, the fire's probable cause and any recommendations that could potentially prevent further incidents. NTSB investigators said in a report released last month that the cause remains undetermined but a possible ignition point was, phones and other electronics plugged into outlets.
One crew member told authorities that he saw sparks when he plugged in his cellphone hours before the fire. The surviving crew members also told investigators that they were never instructed on emergency procedures. It was to be noted that five crew members, including the captain, were asleep when the fire broke out, an apparent violation of Coast Guard regulations requiring a roving watch, and managed to escape by jumping into the water.

MV SOFRANA SURVILLE Two crew members tested positive for COVID 19

Two crew members have tested positive for Covid-19 aboard the 'Sofrana Surville' and thought to be the source of New Zealand's recent community infections. All 19 crew members of the vessel were tested after a New Zealand port worker who had been on the ship tested positive for Covid-19 on Oct 17. Arrangements were now underway to transfer the two crew members who returned with positive Covid-19 results to a hospital ashore. The vessel remained at anchor in pos. 26° 40.60' S 153° 17.17' E, being quarantined off Mooloolaba. The ship was on passage between Noumea and Brisbane when the health alert was raised.

Ship held off Queensland due to corona virus fear

As there are fears the crew of the 'Sofrana Surville' which was anchored off Queensland could be carrying a strain of COVID-19, she was prevented from docking in Brisbane, and was instead anchored off the coast of Mooloolaba on Oct 21, 2020. The 'Sofrana Surville' was originally set to arrive in Queensland, but was anchored off the Sunshine Coast. All 19 crew members on board the vessel were tested by Queensland Health on Oct 20 after an engineer, who worked on-board, tested positive in New Zealand on Oct 17. It was believed he caught the virus while working on the vessel off Auckland on Oct 12 and 13. The crew would also undergo serology testing. The vessel first entered Queensland’s waters on Oct 19, after departing Auckland on Oct 14 and travelling via Noumea on Occt 17. There have been no reports of illness on board.”

FSO NABARIMA ENI got permission to offload crude from troubled FSO

The USA granted the Italian-based multinational oil company ENI permission to begin offloading crude oil from the FSO 'Nabarima' without breaking international sanctions on Venezuela. The vessel which carried almost 1.3 million barrels of crude oil was in danger of causing an environmental disaster after it was highlighted that it was listing. ENI will also be able to repair the vessel as permission for such was received on Oct 29. The company was currently awaiting permission from Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), the Venezuelan state-owned oil company, before engaging in the process. Earlierin October, a TT delegation also conducted an assessment of the FSO Nabarima to determine the severity of the matter and reported that the ship was in stable condition, but there remained concerns over the lengthy period to remove the crude oil from the vessel. On October 22, the Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Franklin Khan, stated that a recommendation of the TT team was to speed up the process of the offloading procedure to minimise any additional risks.
ENI was on standby to conduct the ship-to-ship transfers using “state-of-the-art solutions” upon confirmation from the US that this process would be in line with the international sanctions' regime. ENI have also confirmed that a crude tanker, the 'Delta Captain', which is currently in the Caribbean Sea, had been chartered by ENI to serve the recovery plan agreed with PDVSA. Over the past two months the vessel has never entered Venezuelan waters and is currently in international waters.

FSO found safe during inspection

The 'Nabarima' was no longer posing a major environmental risk, said Trinidad and Tobago’s government on Oct 21.Observations made by a team of experts who visited the FSO showed no visible tilt or water ingress within the vessel. The team was not allowed to take photos or videos of the event. The Venezuelan representatives who accompanied the Trinidadian experts who inspected the vessel took photos, which they will request.
The team — which consisted of senior petroleum engineer Craig Boodoo, Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard officer Lt Warner and port state inspector of the Maritime Services Division, Michael Daniel— was taken on a fly-around of the vessel but that they observed no visible tilt.
The team also inspected other areas of the vessel, including the control room, boiler room, pumps and bilge tanks and noticed no water ingress. The tour lasted about three hours. Their report indicated that everything seemed to have been fine. There was no evidence of water ingress of water presence. Two generators were operational, one was on standby…all systems appeared to be functional. The double hull was intact. The representatives were open about the incidents which took place in September which have since been rectified. They also showed their oil spill response plan which was deemed satisfactory. Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela both share an oil spill contingency plan which could be invoked by either party if there was imminent danger. The tanker 'Icaro' was due to offload the crude, which would most likely be transferred to Venezuela. The offloading of the 'Nabarima'’s 1.3 million barrels of oil would take between 30-35 days. The transfer process that was currently taking place, albeit slow, was considered very safe.
There has been much diplomatic activity behind the scenes, with constant communication between both nations. A follow-up visit was requested to monitor the transfer as operations continue.

The 'Icaro', a tanker operated by the Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), a Venezuelan state oil company, approached the 'Nabarima' on Oct 20 at 2.37 p.m, where it was expected to receive a shipment of the stored oil amid environmental concerns. The PDVSA planned to offload some of the oil on board via a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer involving the 'Icaro'. The Venezuelan barge 'Inmaculada' must also participate in the STS operation, which presents its own risks.

Brigitte Bulk carrier suffered defect

The 'Brigitte', while en route from Rostock to Suez, was reported as not under command in position 49 55 43 N, 003 11 55 W, on Oct 20, 2020, at 5.34 p.m. The defect was rectified and the vessel resumed the voyage at 6.10 p.m. with an ETA as of Oct 29.

King Milo Master died in Gove

The 48 year old master of the 'King Milo', which was berthed at Gove, fell ill and died on Oct 20, 2020. The ship had arrived at Gove from Zhangjiagang via Manila, where a crew change was carried out. The ship was actually carrying out loading operations.

UNISPIRIT Cocaine found in cargo

The cargo of bagged millet and corn in the cargo hold of the 'Unispirit' was searched by unified Spanish police, Coastguard and customs teams during five consecutive days at Las Palmas. The ship had berthed on Oct 16, 2020, coming from Sao Sebastiao in Brazil and being enroute to Cadiz, for a thorough search. 1,200 kilo of cocaine were found hidden in the cargo. 1,5 tons of the same cocaine had already been found during loading operations at San Sebastiao on Oct 2 in the cargo holds among bags. No arrests were made among the partially Russian crew. The vessel was released and left Las Palmas late on Oct 21 with an ETA at Cadiz as of Oct 24.

Errina Ship Security Alert System was an error

It has been confirmed that the Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) activated on the 'Errina' appeared to have been in error and the vessel has subsequently been shown to be at a location South of Lagos. Indications were that the vessel position was 200 miles West Sao Tome. This position would have been irregular to her known trading pattern. Reporting indicated that the vessel was boarded but all personnel had managed to retreat to the vessel citadel and were subsequently safe and accounted for. Wilst details remain unclear the vessel can be seen to have recorded her departure from Limboh anchorage on Oct 20 at 2.20 p.m. heading in a South West Direction. The vessel ceased broadcasting on AIS at around  3 p.m. The vessel has an established trading pattern between Lomé, Lagos and the wider Niger Delta region. Notably all transits throughout the wider Nigerian EEZ were conducted with AIS off. The Nigerian Navy have recently mounted operations to interdict and arrest any vessel found not broadcasting on AIS.

Tanker and crew safe

The 'Errina' and its crew were now safe, after the owner - Akron Trade and Transport in the United Arab Emirates - managed to get in touch with the ship. It was still unclear whether the ship has been subjected to a hijacking attempt.
The 'Errina' was 200 nautical miles west of Sao Tome in the Gulf of Guinea when the ship's AIS signal disappeared and the owner lost contact with the ship. Two safety vessels have been in contact with the ship, and both times the crew reported all was well on board. But it was not clear whether it has been attacked or not. On Oct 24 at 7 a.m. it anchored off Lagos.

The 'Errina' was attacked by pirates in the morning of Oct 22, 2020, in the Gulf of Guinea west of Sao Tome, the tanker’s SSAS was activated. The tanker has been underwwy in Gulf of Guinea waters since its delivery in 2019. The latest AIS signal dated from Oct 20 after it left the Limboh Terminal in Cameroon.

Maersk Rubicon Perpetrators stole mooring ropes

The 'Maersk Rubicon', being moored in position 04 46 00S, 011 47 00E, at the Pointe Noire Anchorage, Republic of the Congo, was boarded by three or four perpetrators, on Oct 19, 2020, at 2.07 a.m. Crew members spotted them on the forecastle of the vessel, raised alarm and withdrew into the citadel. A patrol vessel was dispatched to the anchorage and conducted an inspection. At first light, a search of the vessel was carried out by the crew members and they noticed that two mooring ropes had been stolen. The perpetrators may have gained access to the vessel via the anchor chain.

Lady Kenda Allision in Natashquan

The 'Lady Kenda' 100 gt, was disabled off Natashquan, Quebec, on Oct 16, 2020. The vessel was towed to Natashquan. On Oct 18 she allided with the dock in Natashquan after all but one of the vessel's mooring lines broke due to wave impact. The crew, with the assistance of shore personnel, secured the vessel alongside, using new mooring lines. Minor damages to both the dock and the vessel were reported.

Ken Rei Crew tested again

The crew of the 'Ken Rei' were all tested for COVID-19 again on Oct 28 at the Higgins & Geddis Wharves in Napier. They have all returned a second negative test result. The ship was due to depart Napier and head for Tauranga on Oct 29.

Ship in port after isolation

The 'Ken Rei' has docked at Napier Port on Oct 27 after its crew of 21 completed 14 days in isolation. They were close contacts of an engineer who tested positive after spending time on the logging ship when it was berthed in New Plymouth. The vessel had been off the Napier coast for a fortnight and the crew have tested negative. It berthed at 6 a.m. at the Higgins & Geddis Wharves and was expected to depart on Oct 29.

Doctors to be dropped off on bulk carrier for testings

A team of doctors was to be helicoptered to the 'Ken Rei' off the coast of Napier to do Covid-19 swab tests. One of the Auckland port workers who has tested positive for the virus worked on the vessel in the past fortnight. That led Napier Port to refuse entry to the vessel and requested it to remain offshore for a 14-day isolation period. Now the ship's charter company has contracted doctors from a Napier medical centre to collect swabs from the crew. Preparation for the flight and safety protocols had been worked out over the last two days. Weather permitting, a helicopter would fly out to the ship on Oct 22.

SKEENA QUEEN Ferry sidelined due to technical trouble

A complimentary water taxi was transporting people between Salt Spring Island’s Fulford Harbour and Swartz Bay on Oct 21, 2020, after the 'Skeena Queen' ran into mechanical problems. The water taxi has a 15-passenger capacity. Along with the that, the 'Mayne Queen' was scheduled to provide an afternoon round trip of supplementary service. The 'Skeena Queen' had encountered issues with two electrical generators and needed repairs in Swartz Bay. The 'Bowen Queen' continued to provide service between Vesuvius and Crofton, as scheduled. On Oct 18, the 'Queen of Alberni was withdrawn from the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route due to a problem with its controllable pitch propeller.

Maersk Esmeraldas Windlass trouble off Languard Pt.

The 'Maersk Esmeraldas', while enroute from Colombo, suffered problems with the windlass which recovers the anchor, 15 miles east of Languard Point, Felixstowe, in position 51 55 15.6 N, 001 43 43.0 E, on Oct 22, 2020, at 06.40 a.m. The Duty Counter Pollution Officer has been made aware of the incident and will contact the owners. The vessel had 109.321 tons as cargo and a crew of 23 on board. After troubleshooting, the ship docked at the CT Berth 8&9 in Felixstowe at 5.20 p.m.

Kam Shun 338 Containers lost in grounding

The 'Kam Shun 338' with a cargo of containers ran onto the embankment of Stonecutters Island, Hong Kong, in the morning of Oct 23, 2020. Five container fell overboard due to the impact of the grounding. A recovery operation was under way.

Asli Elif Freighter under tow to Marmaris

The 'Asli Elif', while enroute from Dikili to Marmaris with 11 crew members on board, suffered a mechanical failure in the night of Oct 22, 2020, and went adrift in southern direction in the Crete sea, 20 nautical miles south of Milos island. The ship was taken in tow in the morning of Oct 23 by the Greek tug 'Mentoras' (IMO: 9061722), which had sailed from Heraklion at 12.40 a.m., and was being towed to its port of destination with an ETA as of Oct 25.
