| Pacific Ocean (June 9, 2005) - The Japanese Maritime Self Defense (JDS) ship JDS Myoko (DDG 175), foreground, sails in formation along with the USS Shiloh guided missile cruiser (CG 67), rear, during a passing exercise between the U.S. and Japanese naval forces. | At sea aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Nov. 16, 2002 -- Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ship Ariake (JDS 109) cruises along side Kitty Hawk during a Photo Exercise. Japanese ships integrated into Kitty Hawk’s battle group during Exercise Keen Sword 2003. Keen Sword 2003 is the seventh in a series of regularly scheduled joint/bilateral field training exercise since 1986 involving the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and United States military. The purpose of Keen Sword is to train and evaluate wartime functions and bilateral cooperation procedures against the backdrop of a regional contingency scenario that has direct and immediate consequences to the U.S. and Japan. RIMPAC is the largest international maritime exercise in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. This years exercise will include seven participating nations; Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, South Korea, Britain and the United States. RIMPAC is intended to enhance the tactical proficiency of participating units in a wide array of combined operations at sea, while enhancing stability in the Pacific Rim region. | 24 Jan 2008Japanese navy destroyer Murasame leaves Yokosuka naval port, near Tokyo, for the Indian Ocean Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008. The Murasame departed Thursday to resume the country's anti-terrorism mission in the Indian Ocean after a divisive battle in parliament caused a three-month suspension. | 13,950-ton JDS Hyuga (16DDH) is handed over to Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force from its builder IHI Marine United Inc. in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo, Wednesday, March 18, 2009. The newly-built helicopter-carrying destroyer, similar in design to a small aircraft carrier, is the the largest Japanese warship since World War II, deploying three helicopters on the flight deck while carrying up to 11 others on the hangar deck inside, Kyodo News said.
