| Bremerhaven port eyes new developments Sep 30 18:26As the long-delayed €32.7 million reconstructions of Bremerhaven's important Westkaje nears completion, more major site development is in store for the vital German port. Located at the mouth of the River Weser, Bremerhaven plays an important role in the German economy as a trade port. It was founded in 1827 and is now the fourth-largest port in Europe. It is home to a university of applied sciences and the German Maritime Museum. The port city is famous for its large harbour, which is one of the biggest in Germany for passenger traffic, after Hamburg. The Port of Bremerhaven was an important harbour for emigration in Europe. The volume of trade and emigration through the Port of Bremerhaven to North America grew fast. Robert Howe, head of Bremenports, said that his company had long-standing plans to rebuild the Columbuskaje, home of the port’s cruise shipping centre. Plans are also in place to reshape the entrance to Bremerhaven’s busy Fishing Port. He also added that his company was “currently preparing to push ahead with all speed on further projects aimed at strengthening port infrastructure.” After the recent upgrade, the Kaiserhafen III harbour basin has been widened by 9m..This makes it easier for large ships using the new quay to manoeuvre – specifically the giant vehicle carriers, e.g. VEGA LEADER which use the nearby Kaiserhafen auto terminals but also larger ships which might call for repair or refurbishment at the adjacent Lloyd Werft. |

| LOUIS JOLLIET Main engine failure on Great Lakes Oct 01 10:05The 'Louis Jolliet' suffered a failure of its main engine off Deschambault, Quebec, in pos. 46 38 25 N, 71 55 18 W, on 23 Sep 2020. The ferry proceeded to the nearest anchorage for repairs. It arrived at Montreal on Sep 24, and remained stationary in the King Edward Basin as of Oct 1. Cruise ship docked at Quebec City leaks 7,500 litres of diesel fuel Nov 09 2015 09:05About 7,500 litres of diesel fuel have leaked into the St. Lawrence River from a cruise ship docked in Quebec City. Urgences-Environnement and the coast guard were still working Sunday afternoon to contain the spill, which was first noticed around 7:30 a.m. The diesel was leaking from the Louis-Jolliet, a boat that could transport up to 1,000 passengers. But the leak would likely have a minimum impact on river ecosystems, said Urgences-Environnement spokesperson Frédéric Cournier. “We are here to make sure it’s all cleaned up,” said Cournier, adding that the owner of the cruise ship, Croisières AML, was also helping with the operation. “Luckily the weather and the tides this morning made it such that the diesel stayed put.” Clean-up teams have set up booms to further contain the oil, and are using special machinery to pump it out of the water. Cournier could not pinpoint the cause of the leak and said it was too early to say whether fines would be eventually levied on the owner for negligence. Inexperienced Chief Mate Grounded Louis Jolliet Oct 04 2014 09:35The Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s (TSB) investigation into the grounding of the passenger vessel Louis Jolliet has highlighted the need for comprehensive emergency procedures, training and drills, according to its investigation report. On May 16, 2013, the passenger vessel Louis Jolliet ran aground off Sainte-Pétronille, Île d’Orléans, Quebec, while on a cruise with 57 passengers. | STIKINE Ferry broke down Oct 01 10:21After the 'Stikine' has broken down and remained sidelined in Ketchikan, some Prince of Wales Island residents were stranded in Ketchikan. The return trip from Ketchikan to Hollis in the afternoon of Sep 30, 2020, was canceled after the crew found a mechanical issue in one of the vessel’s engines. Repairs were expected to take at least three weeks, and all sailings have been canceled until further notice. The issue meant the U.S. Coast Guard won’t allow the ferry to sail with passengers, but it was anticipated she would be able to make a crew-only return trip to Hollis in the morning of Oct 1 to return Prince of Wales Island residents’ cars to the island. The breakdown left the IFA without any working ferries as the 'Prince of Wales' broke down and repairs on that vessel were expected to be completed only in November. The Alaska Marine Highway System was contacted about filling the gap left by the IFA. | WAYMON L BOYD National Transportation Safety Board has issued a preliminary report in accident Oct 01 12:06The National Transportation Safety Board on Sep 30 has issued a preliminary report on the fire aboard the 'Waymon L. Boyd' on Aug 21 in which four crew members died. At this stage, the NTSB has issued no finding of probable cause, but this initial report sets out some facts that were not immediately clear. The dredger reportedly struck a submerged 16-inch liquid propane pipeline during dredging operations adjacent to EPIC Corpus Christi Marine Terminal, located on the Inner Harbor of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel in Corpus Christi. A geyser of gas and water erupted adjacent to the vessel. Shortly thereafter, the gas plume ignited, and fire consumed the vessel and surrounding shoreline. Several other vessels assisted the 'Waymon L. Boyd' during dredging operations, including work boats, anchor barges, booster barges and a supply barge. A total of 18 personnel employed by Orion Marine Group were working on the dredge and assist boats on the day of the accident. Local first responders located the victims and took 6 of the 14 surviving crewmembers to burn units in San Antonio, Texas. No members of the public were injured in this accident. The fire aboard the dredge was extinguished by 4:10 p.m. local time. However, at 8:30 p.m., the fire temporarily re-ignited and was reported to be out by 9:30 p.m. The dredge sank overnight. The damaged pipeline (TX219) was a 16-inch liquid propane line operated by Enterprise Products Operating, LLC, and was installed in 1968. An underwater segment of the pipeline was in close proximity to the area where Orion Marine Group was conducting dredging operations. At the time of the accident, the Enterprise Products pipeline controller received a low-pressure alarm on pipeline TX219. Enterprise Products technicians subsequently closed valves upstream and downstream of the incident location to isolate the pipeline. The estimated release of propane from the pipeline was about 6,000 barrels. The U.S. Coast Guard declared the accident a major marine casualty. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is the lead federal agency for the safety investigation. The Coast Guard, Orion Marine Group (owner/operator), Enterprise Products Operating, LLC (pipeline operator), the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and the Railroad Commission of Texas were named as parties to the investigation. Investigators have interviewed several of the surviving crewmembers and company personnel, and collected documents regarding the dredging operations, crew training, and pipeline marking and damage prevention requirements. On Aug 24, an underwater inspection found evidence of mechanical damage and two wall breaches in the pipeline. The 'Waymon L. Boyd'’s cutter dredge head has been recovered being transported to a secure location for examination. On-scene work will continue with the removal of the damaged pipeline for further examination and testing at NTSB’s laboratory, as well as interviews with additional crew and company officials. Bodies of remaining missing crew members recovered from wreckage Aug 25 10:10US Coast Guard and salvage crews recovered the bodies of the two remaining crewmembers on Aug 24 after recovering a portion of the 'Waymon L Boyd' from the Corpus Christi Ship Channel in Corpus Christi, Texas. All missing crewmembers have now been accounted for and the families have been notified. Mark Stauffer, the CEO of the Orion Marine Group was grateful to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Port of Corpus Christi Authority, and the rest of the associated agencies for their tireless efforts in assisting in the search and recovery efforts. The portion of the dredging vessel was located in the middle of the channel during diving operations on Aug 23. Pollution response and salvage operations of the vessel were ongoing. The Captain of the Port has modified the safety zone in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel to allow vessel traffic throughout the Inner Harbor with restrictions. Approximately 1,600 gallons of diesel fuel has been removed from the water. The cause of the incident was under investigation. Pollution and salvage response continued Aug 24 09:33The US Coast Guard crews and partner agencies continued their pollution and salvage response for the 'Waymon L. Boyd' in Corpus Christi on Aug 24. Dive and salvage operations commenced at approximately 10 a.m. and were ongoing. A piece of the dredging vessel was located in the middle of the channel and was in the process of being safely removed. The Texas General Land Office, state lead for coastal oil spill response, were on scene and working to identify and protect Texas natural resources and ensure the spill is contained. Approximately 1,600 gallons of diesel fuel has been removed from the water and 680 gallons of diesel fuel/water was skimmed overnight. The Captain of the Port has reopened the Corpus Christi Ship Channel with certain restrictions from Chemical Basin to Viola Basin The Port of Corpus Christi and the Incident Management Team continued the recovery and salvage of the vessel in partnership with the Orion Marine Group.
