Le HMS Birmingham est un croiseur léger de la classe Birmingham
Au sein de la 1re escadre de croiseurs légers, il participe aux batailles de Heligoland et de Dogger Bank, en août il coule quatre navires marchands et éperonne et coule le sous-marin U-15. Muté dans la 2e escadre en février 1915, il combat au Jutland.

Birmingham Class Light Cruisers. Cruisers in the class were HMS Birmingham, HMS Lowestoft, HMS Nottingham and HMS Adelaide.

History of the Birmingham Class Light cruisers of the Royal Navy. Part of the 1912 building programmed. They were improved versions of the Chatham class, with the main alteration of an addition of a second 6-inch gun on the forecastle.. The Birmingham Class were very successful and apart form HMS Nottingham lost during world war one. were kept in the Naval fleet until the 1931. and HMS Adelaide continued in service until 1949 with the Australian navy.

HMS Birmingham. Built at Elswick amd launched 7th May 1913 and completed in January 1914. joined the 1st light Cruiser Squadron in 1914. and in June of 1914 visited Kiel. During World war One. she rammed and sunk U-15 on the 9th of August 1914 as well as sinking two German merchant ships. and also took part in the Dogger Bank action in January 1915. In February 1915 she joined the 2nd Light Cruiser squadron. On the 18th of June HMS Birmingham attacked a u-boat without success. and during The battle of Jut land sustained some damage caused by splintering. during the night of the battle.. After the Great War she became the flagship to the 6th Light cruiser Squadron 1919 - 1920. then transferred to the Nore during 1920 - 1922. Re commissioned in November 1923 to the Africa Station with the 6th Light Cruiser Squadron as Flagship. (relieving HMS Lowestoft). HMS Birmingham served in foreign stations until being sold in 1931.

HMS Birmingham 7th May 1913 Sold for scrapping in March 1931.

Le succés des croiseurs de la classe Chatham conduisit l'amirauté à en commander 3 autres, les Birmingham, Nottingham et Lowestoft. Ils furent mis en chantier en 1912, lancés en 1913 et achevés début 1914. Ils étaient virtuellement des copies des premiers, à ceci près qu'ils possédaient une pièce de 152 mm supplémentaire à l'avant, avec un arrangement en deux pièces latérales. Le Lowestoft fut équipé d'un mât tripode dès l'origine supportant une passerelle avec un projecteur, configuration reprise lors d'une refonte du Birmingham en 1917. Leur passerelle fut agrandie et un canon de 76 de DCA ajouté en 1915. Ces navires donnant toute satisfaction, on entrepris la construction d'une quatrième unité, HMS Adelaide, mis en chantier à Cockatoo en Australie pour la RAN. Ce dernier, lancé en 1918 et achevé en 1922, intégrait toutes les modifications des premiers. Leur carrière fut très active: Le HMS Bimingham coula en 1914 deux cargos Allemands, et éperonna et coula l'U15 quelques jours après le début des hostilités. Il prit part à la bataille du Dogger bank. Il participa aussi à la bataille du Jutland et n'y fut que légèrement endommagé. Il fut mis en réserve en 1920 puis repris du service dans des stations lintaines avant d'être réformé en 1931. Le Lowestoft servit en mer du Nord, coulant un cargo Allemand en 1914, participan à l'action du Dogger Bank, puis ralliant l'escadre de méditerranée où il resta jusqu'en 1919. Il fut basé en Afrique jusqu'en 1924, puis d'autres stations lointaines, et vendu en 1931. Le Nottingham combattit au Dogger bank et au Jutland, et fut coulé le 19 août 1916 par l'U52 ( salve de trois torpilles ), emportant 38 hommes d'équipage. Le HMAS Adelaide, plus grand et plus lourd, participa à la seconde guerre mondiale.
