Hr.Ms. Willem Van Der Zaan (F 829), anchored in the Bosphorus near Besiktas (Istanbul) on the 11th May 2006. During the week I stayed there plenty of Nato naval ships arrived or passed Istanbul.
Gulf of Mexico (Sept. 7, 2005) - The Royal Netherlands Navy frigate HNLMS Van Amstel (F 831) conducts operations near the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi as part of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The Dutch Navy flew medical personnel ashore from the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) to help the victims of the hurricane. The Navy's involvement in the Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations is led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
Gulf of Mexico (Sept. 7, 2005) - The Dutch frigate HNLMS Van Amstel (F 831) sits anchored off the Mississippi coast, while assisting with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts along the Gulf Coast. The Dutch and Mexican Navies, have sent ships to assist joint U.S. military forces in the area. The Navy's involvement in the humanitarian assistance operation is being lead by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
Persian Gulf (Dec. 20, 2004) - The Dutch frigate HNLMS Tjerk Hiddes (F830) pulls alongside the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) for a fuel transfer replenishment operation. Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) embarked aboard Truman is providing close air support and conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions over Iraq. Truman’s Carrier Strike Group Ten (CSG-10) and CVW-3 are on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
CARIBBEAN SEA (Aug. 31, 2007) - Dutch frigate HNLMS Van Nes (F 833) patrols the waters off the coast of Panama during PANAMAX 2007. Civil and military forces from 19 countries are participating in PANAMAX 2007, a U.S. Southern Command joint and multi-national training exercise co-sponsored with the government of Panama, in the waters off the coasts of Panama and Honduras.
Het multipurposefregat Hr.Ms. Van Nes komt vrijdag 14 december terug in Den Helder. Het schip is de afgelopen zes maanden in maanden rond de Nederlandse Antillen en Aruba ingezet voor drugsbestrijdingoperaties, kustwachttaken en steunverlening bij rampen. Hr.Ms. Van Galen neemt de taken van de Van Nes in het Caribisch gebied over.
Hr.Ms. Van Nes heeft tijdens haar uitzending onder meer humanitaire hulp verleend aan de bevolking van Nicaragua, die in september was getroffen door orkaan Felix. Daarnaast zijn de betrekkingen in de regio versterkt dankzij gezamenlijke oefeningen. In november heeft de Van Nes intensief gepatrouilleerd rond St. Maarten, waarbij alle scheepvaart van en naar het eiland is gecontroleerd op smokkel en illegaal grensverkeer.
Voor Hr.Ms. Van Nes was het de laatste uitzending naar de Cariben. Na terugkeer wordt het schip verkocht aan Portugal.

Hr.Ms. Van Nes is op vrijdag 14 december om 11.00 uur teruggekeerd uit de Caraïben. Het afgelopen half jaar was zij stationsschip in de West, waar zij zich bezig hield met drugsbestrijding, kustwachttaken en humanitaire operaties. Eén van de hoogtepunten van de termijn in de Caraïben was de inzet in het noorden van Nicaragua na de verwoestende passage van orkaan Felix op 4 september. De West-termijn was de laatste reis voor het fregat. Hr.Ms. Van Nes zal gereed worden gemaakt voor verkoop aan Portugal. De overdracht zal in december 2008 plaatsvinden.
Hr.Ms. Van Nes wordt afgelost door Hr.Ms. Van Galen.

VIERTAL LANDEN SLUIT OVEREENKOMST M-FREGATTEN
Nederland, Portugal, Chili en België gaan intensiever samenwerken op het gebied van Multipurpose fregatten. Nederland heeft hiervoor dinsdag in Lissabon een Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ondertekend met Portugal en Chili. België sluit binnenkort aan bij het MoU.
Het MoU bestaat uit vier hoofdonderwerpen, welke nog verdere invulling krijgen. Het betreft opleiding en training, groot onderhoud, reserveonderdelen en modernisatie van de M-fregatten. Door de samenwerking kunnen de vier landen gebruik maken van opgedane kennis en faciliteiten. Daarnaast verschaffen ze zich een betere onderhandelingspositie voor bijvoorbeeld de aanschaf van nieuwe en reserveonderdelen.
Zowel Chili, Portugal als België hebben hun M-fregatten – elk twee – van Nederland gekocht. Chili is tot nu toe het enige land dat beide fregatten al in bezit heeft. Hr.Ms. Abraham van Hulst is in 2005 overgedragen en Hr.Ms. Tjerk Hiddes volgde in 2007. België ontving vorig jaar Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman en krijgt dit jaar Hr.Ms. Willem van der Zaan. Hr.Ms. Van Nes en Hr.Ms. Van Galen worden respectievelijk dit jaar en volgend jaar aan Portugal overgedragen.
Hr.Ms. Van Speijk (F828) en Hr.Ms. Van Amstel (F831) blijven onderdeel uitmaken van de Nederlandse marinevloot.

Aug. 16, 2002 - The Dutch frigate HNLM Van Galen (F 834) refuels along side USS George Washington (CVN 73). Washington is homeported in Norfolk, Va. and is on a six-month deployment conducting missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
