FREGATES

Le Conseil des Ministres a approuvé le 18.11.2005 l’acquisition de deux frégates de type M de la marine royale néerlandaise.
Le jeudi 22.12.2005 la Belgique et les Pays-Bas ont signé à Bruxelles un contrat portant sur l’achat par la Belgique de deux frégates de seconde main du type « M ».
La livraison de la première est prévue pour mars 2007 tandis que la seconde devrait suivre en mars 2008.
L’achat de frégates britanniques avait un moment été envisagé mais ce projet ne s’est pas concrétisé et ces navires ont finalement été vendus à la marine chilienne.

Octobre 2009: le ministre belge de la Défense a demandé à son collègue hollandais Eimert van Middelkoop, de pouvoir prendre une frégate en prêt.
La Belgique voudrait utiliser la frégate fin de l’année prochaine comme navire de commandement pour la mission des Nations Unies contre les pirates au large de la côte somalienne. Selon les prévisions la Belgique assumera le commandement de la mission Atalanta d’août à décembre de l’année prochaine en collaboration avec les Pays-Bas. Les belges ne disposant pas de bâtiment capable d’assurer le commandement d’autant de navires, le ministre Pieter De Crem a demandé à son collègue de pouvoir assumer le commandement depuis une frégate néerlandaise correspondant aux critères nécessaires.

Vendredi 13.9.1988 heurte un rocher au large de la Norvège dans le Vaestfjord durant un exercice OTAN. Remorquée jusqu’à Anvers où elle passera un long séjour en cale sèche.
1993 : opération en Adriatique (embargo décrété par les Nations-Unies contre la Yougoslavie (Opération Sharp Fence – Sharp Guard).
1993 rayé. (1. juillet ?) (suite au plan Delcroix, ministre de la Défense Nationale – restrictions budgétaires)
laid up at Zeebrugge et mise sous cocon. Tentative de vente resta infructueuse.
12.5.97 quitte Zeebrugge pour Anvers où elle se verra enlever tout le matériel pouvant encore servir sur une des 3 frégates restantes.
1999 : il est décidé qu’elle sera vendue pour démolition.
Mardi 7.11.2000 à 9h30 quitte Zeebrugge en remorque des rem. belges UNION 5 (290/92) et GENT (383/85) (owners : U.R.S., NV) pour Gand pour BU par Van Heyghen Recycling.

Avait quitté Zeebruges le 1.9.1988 pour 4 mois de STANAV. Le jour en cause était en train de chasser un sous-marin en compagnie d’autres frégates.
A 13 h 13 fin d’un vertrep avec un Seaking de la marine Canadienne 16 kn
Tout à coup le navire s’arrêta subitement avec d’énormes vibrations. Heurté un rocher immergé (marée basse, serait passé si marée haute..) (il semblerait que le point de la carte indiquant l’obstacle ait été “caché” par les lignes au crayon tracées pour marquer toutes les routes que la frégate avait parcourues lors de la chasse au sous-marin)
Deux alarmes voies d’eau: 1 dans la machine 3 et 1 dans le colt water plant arrière. Un mètre d’eau dans les compartiments concernés.
Seaking récupéré par une frégate canadienne.
WESTHINDER se libère avec la marée montante.
Arrive à couple du USS PUGET SOUND AD-38 (destroyer tender) vers 18 h. Réparation partielle de la coque avec l’aide de ce navire-atelier.
Pendant la nuit une tempête se déclare, frégate abimée par le vent et le choc des vagues. Un seul moteur en état de marche, hélice TB (?) faussée, ligne d’arbre et réduction endommagées. Quitte le navire US en pleine nuit cap sur Bodo.
Environ 5 mois d’attende à Bodo avant qu’un remorqueur de haute mer de la marine française le CENTAURE le ramène en Belgique.

15-20 ZINNIA Royal Navy (Fleet sweeping vessel – FLOWER class, AZALEA type) Emergency War Programme
Avril 1916: est au large des côtes irlandaises et participe à l’opération qui conduit au sabordage du steamer allemand LIBAU (1228/11) et fait avorter le débarquement du leader nationaliste irlandais Roger Casement.
The Imperial German Navy arms carrier LIBAU was intercepted 21.4.1916 by HMS BLUEBELL off Tralee Bay after attempt to land weapons in support of the Eastern Rising had failed. The ship was scuttled by her crew next day in pos. 51°43’N-08°13’W (2 m E of Daunt Rock L.V), while being brought into Queenstown.
21.8.1917 : collision with USS BENHAM (DD 49) which is badly damaged.
Duinengalm 2.4.1920: we krijgen een nieuwe kustwachter, een gansch modern schip, de engelsche kanonneerboot ZINNIA.

Duinengalm du vendredi 10.9.1920: le ZINNIA est parti jeudi pour Gand pour entrer en cale sèche. Le 14.9 il entreprendra sa 1ère croisière.
Duinengalm du 17.9.1920: est parti mercredi pour un voyage de 3 jours (jusque samedi). Lundi il reprendra à nouveau la mer, cette fois avec les “scheepsjongen” et pour un voyage de 14 jours vers le Murray Forth.
DG du vendredi 10.11.1922 : hier jeudi le ZINNIA est parti pour Bruxelles où il participera dimanche à la parade navale qui aura lieu à l’occasion de l’inauguration des installations maritimes de Bruxelles.
Echo du 9.1.1926 : le garde-pêche belge ZINNIA en cours de croisière dans la mer du Nord, a reçu hier matin un SOS du vapeur allemand LOTTE LEONHARDT de Hambourg. Le ZINNIA se porta à sa rencontre et le trouva dans le Nord du bateau-phare Shipwash ayant le feu dans ses cales.
Le ZINNIA lui a prêté assistance et l’a convoyé jusque Harwich
30.10.1931 rattaché à l’Ecole de Marine (qui gère la police des pêches)
Echo du 17.6.1931 : le ZINNIA, entrant dans le bassin à flot du port de Boulogne, a au cours des manœuvres qu’il effectuait pour accoster, donné de son étrave dans la coque du chalutier MERUL de la firme Bouclet, Zunnequin & C° de Boulogne et lui a causé de sérieuses avaries.
Une voie d’eau très grave s’est produite et il a fallut faire appel au remorqueur LA MORINIE qui para promptement au danger. A ce moment l’eau commençait à envahir la cale.
Le chalutier sera forcé à un chômage d’au moins 20 jours.

Echo du 4.11.1936 : des crédits ont été demandés dans le cadre du Budget de l’Etat 1937. Dépenses extraordinaires effectuées au moyen de crédits dont l’affectation a été décidée par l’Office de redressement économique (OREC) : …., pour la construction d’un nouveau garde-pêche (les chaudières du ZINNIA sont complètement usées et le bateau ne vaut pas qu’on les remplace) coût : 12000000 BEF.

1er commandant fut blessé lors d’un bombardement aérien à Rotterdam peu avant la mise en service du navire lors d’un déplacement à terre. Remplacé par le KL August Eggers qui conservera son commandement jusqu’à la fin de la guerre.
4.1943: affecté à la 5 Sicherungsdivision/ 1 Sperrbrecherflottille (cdt KK der Reserve Wilhelm Frank) à Cuxhaven.
9 Octobre 1944: mit dem Kanonenboot K 4 wird bei einer Sicherungsfahrt mit Sondereinsatz im Seegebiet der Westfriesischen Inseln/Niederlande, mit Begleitsicherung durch M 104 und M 201 (7.M/S Fl), das Kanonenboot von sieben (ou 8 ?) britischen Torpedoschnellboten angegriffen. Beim ersten Angriff warden von M 201 zwei dieser MTBs auf 700 m Entfernung kampfunfähig geschossen. Ein weiteres Boot erhält von K 4 einen Volltreffer und fliegt mit einer Stichflamme in die Luft. Am Ende des Gefechts haben K 4 und M 104 sieben Leichtverwundete (K 4: 2), ausserdem haben die beiden Boote einige Treffer in Bordwand, Brücke und Schornstein erhalten (K 4: 7-20 mm). Bei M 201 gab es keine Beschädigungen.

Other source: the fight took place on 9.10 (not 6.10) between 01.46 and 02.09 (German time). The German ships
were attacked by MTB’s from the 21st and 22nd MTB-Flotillas. No casualties on the British side. On the German side 2 lightly wounded on both the K 4 and M 104.

Par letter du 24 du meme mois, Mr H. De Vos, directeur general du ministère des Communications, accepte la proposition et désigne Ostende comme port de reception.
14 ou 15.7.1945 (vraisemblablement) le commander Georges Timmermans RNR, en reçoit le commandement provisoire.
17 et 18.7.1945 navire change de poste, passé l’écluse du Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal et va s’amarrer au Pier n°3
21.7.1945 left Cuxhaven for Belgium.
Lundi 23 en début d’après-midi arrive à Ostende. A cette occasion va subir une légère avarie: il heurte par l’arrière un objet submerge en évitant pour s’amarrer au quai n°19.
24.7 : le CF Timmermans transmet son commandement provisoire au LV Böting. Ce même jour, 12 mécaniciens de la Kriegsmarine qui avaient été maintenus à bord, sont débarqués.
25.7 : navire est inspecté par Naval Officer in Charge Ostend et est ensuite remorqué en cale sèche pour examen des dégâts et reparations élémentaires les plus urgentes. Ne reste à bord qu’un equipage de “care and maintenance” (2 officiers, 2 sous-officiers et 20 matelots)
28.7: reste de l’équipage débarque. Aucun travail important ne sera effectué à bord et le navire sera transféré au bassin en face de l’Ecole de navigation où ses accès vont être fermés.

11.4.1946 au matin quitte Ostende pour Anvers. Entre en cale sèche chez Cockerill à Hoboken et en sort le 5 juin. Il restera alors amarré un mois à couple de la malle PRINCE BAUDOUIN, elle aussi en reparation. Pendant cette période est entièrement fermé et isolé pour disinfection et dératisation completes.
Appareille pour rentrer à Ostende le 5 juillet.
Octobre: quitte pour Chatham où il restera deux jours pour y embarquer des grenades anti-sous-marins.
Il aura donc eu ainsi huit jours de mer sous sa proper vapeur, très vraisemblablement les seuls qu’il ait eus avec un equipage de la force navale.
Désarmé une 1ère fois le vendredi 25.7.1947 (remorqué jusqu’au quai Cockerill par le remorqueur ZEELEEUW)
16.9.1947 reçoit un equipage commandé par le CF Lurquin
Conservera son equipage jusqu’au 17.2.1948, mais sans quitter son quai d’amarrage.
Note du 4.4.1948: le Ministre de la Défense Nationale estime que le navire n’est plus d’utilité pour la Force Navale (notre du ministère de la Défense Nationale au secrétaire general des Communications)
Situation du navire restée inchangée jusque mars 1952, si ce n’est que le LV Maldeghem est nommé commandand du navire “in bewaking” du 1.1.1952 au 10.3.1952
Mars 1952 est en cale sèche à Gand où il a été remorqué (une note de juillet 1951 demande de prendre des dispositions pour prescrire dès que possible le carénage du sloop ARTEVELDE, de s’informer du prix d’un éventuel remorquage Ostende-Gand et de faire les démarches nécessaires auprès des autorités portuaires de Bruges pour obtenir un emplacement à quai aussi près que possible du centre de la ville)

Le 23.6.1953 le commodore Robins écrit au Ministre de la Défense Nationale qu’il vient de faire une inspection du navire et que l’ARTEVELDE pourrait offrir des possibilités comme navire-école statique.
7.10.1953: nouvelle note du commodore Robins: l’utilisation du navire comme caserne flottante pour la Division nautique du C.I./FN s’avérerait trop coûteuse pour les budgets disponibles
23.8.1954: PV de remise du navire aux Domaines en vue de sa vente pour BU (PV entre le CF Böting, cdt du centre d’instruction de St Kruis et le Receveur des Domaines à Bruges).

Un détachement du 12ème de Ligne est débarqué au pier Pétrocongo à Ango-Ango(Matadi). Troupes ANC (Armée Nationale Congolaise) et pièces d’artillerie situées sur des hauteurs au NE du pier (relèvements 020 et 050 par rapport au navire) ouvrent le feu vers 16.10 le 11.7.60. DUFOUR est touché et 14 blessés dont 3 graves parmi les hommes du 12ème de Ligne massés sur le pont. DUFOUR riposte avec son artillerie. A 16.30 est hors de portée et descend le fleuve vers Boma où il jette l’ancre à 22.00 à Sacra Ambaca (devant Boma). Etait accompagné par le LECOINTE lors de cette opération.
Note : KAMINA, DE BROUWER, DE MOOR, DUFOUR (arrivé le 23.6.60 à Banane), LECOINTE, OURTHE, SEMOIS, DENDER et RUPEL formaient le Task Group 218.2 (CV Petitjean) lors des évènements survenus lors de l’indépendance du Congo.

Left Malta and the Mediterranean in May 1946 and arrived at Chatham on 6.6.
In July she re-commissioned (Lt Cdr G.R. Paterson RN)
With her sistership ROSARIO (also from the 19th MSF), SPANKER was allocated to the service of VACBNFG (Vice-Admiral Commanding British Naval Forces Germany) and proceeded to Cuxhaven where she was to be based. From Cuxhaven they were in charge of 21 German coastal minesweepers engaged in clearing German minefields in the North Sea. Most of the work was undertaken from Flekkefjord in Norway.
During this period an interesting assignment befel  SPANKER. On 26.12.1946 she was sent from Cuxhaven to the Borkum Roads to pick up a convoy of two ships, the liner MONTE PASCOAL  and the  ?? (SCHWABENLAND ??) which was full of German Warfare bombs and shells to take them through the Kiel canal into the Baltic. There they were scuttled. SPANKER returned to Copenhagen for the New Year festivities.
In April 1947 SPANKER was relieved of duties at Cuxhaven and was sent to Port Edgar, the M/S base on the Firth of Forth. There she was the Senior Officer ship.

Brought to Wilhelmshaven. They cleaned her and put 1236 cubic ft cement in her as ballast to ensure stability. In 1981 work was sufficiently progressed to allow installing the masts and EVERI sailed for the first time in June 1982.
It is said that 32000 workhours were needed to transform her. Length 148 ft, beam 23 ft, mainmast 98 ft and total sail surface 5812 square ft.

In late 1951, six MMS’s were brought out of reserve to be refitted at Gravesend, for service in the Korean war and to be based at Singapore.
The squadron, as it was called, consisted of: MMS’s 1556 (ex 56), 1536 (ex 36), 1579 (ex 79) and half-leader, 1786 (ex 286), 1584 (ex 84) and 1797 (ex 297).
Following the refit, the ships set sail on 28.1.52. Cdt 1579 was Lt Nelson Curryer.
1579’s engine (8 cyl Crossley 2 stroke) would not start, they managed to get away an hour later, heading for Harwich and testing the guns en route.
Minor engine troubles persisted, plus a problem with jammed steering which resulted in the need for a tow from a Harwich tug. After repairs and trials left on 27.2 and arrived Portland 29.2.
The squadron set off on 4.3 escorted by the frigate HMS WIDEMOUTH BAY, having rendezvoused at Polperro, in Cornwall.
Steering gave up again, then troubles with the electrics. Squadron sheltered on Spanish Coast at Ria del Barquero due to bad weather.

17.3 left to Malta. Due to further troubles, plus a force 8-9 gale, the squadron headed for Bizerta after two days at sea.
After repairs left 20.3 and arrived at Malta after 24h steaming.
After a great deal of discussion about the defects on MMS 1579, spares now being required, it was decided that the 5 other ships should sail and leave 1579 follow after the monsoon season. Four of these arrived in Aden on 27.4. MMS 1579 was dogged with further troubles, but finally made the passage to the Far East spending her last days in China.

Taken over by MMS Trust (Founder/Secretary: The Rev. Michael.J. Melvin, B.E.M., 69 Seymours, Harlow, Essex, CM19 5NQ + 13.10.95) and removed to Stoke Creek, Isle of Grain (discovered in Otterham Quay, River Medway).
To be restored in a scheme to provide a floating training and holiday base for the Sea Cadet Corps, Harlow and to stand as a memorial to those who sailed in the MMS.
Received a Ford-supported Conservation Award of 1000 £ in October 1982 through the BBC (David Bellamy,TV Studios, Pebble Mill, Birmingham) who made a film about the ship. Filming took place in July 1982 and screened on 1.12.82
She will be numbered in her original role MMS 191.
1994 still under repair (recaulking and painting of the hull and almost a compete relay of the quarter deck..)
Oct 1995 to be taken over by the Harwich Borough Heritage Museum (chairman: Mr Oswald Denton-Jones) . Is to be put into DD at Chatham where a complete restoration can be carried out. Later is to sail her into Harwich where a berth is awaiting her arrival. Pas réalisé (musée n’a en fait jamais existé !!).
12.12.97 ownership taken over by the Kent Wild Fowling and Conservation Association which in view of the danger she posed, had arranged to dispose of her by having her burnt. This came to the attention of a young man named Ian Hills (Oak and Stone Merchants, 2 Queens Cottage, Molash, Canterbury, Kent CT4 8HJ) whose business involves making furniture and flooring from reclaimed oak. He wasted no time in getting in touch with the Association. The result of which, he and his colleague Richard Wantling are already well on the way to salvaging what remains of MMS 191 (December 1999).
Wood of the boat will maybe be used to build cabinets and shelving of the Guildhall Museum, Queenborough, Isle of Sheppey.(Queenborough was for sometime a Minesweeper Base. Part of the Museum is dedicated to these craft and the role they played).

118th M/S Fl (MMS 43, 77, 112, 188,191 and 193) arrived in Belgium and took on the task of clearing most of the remaining mine infested areas of water around the Belgian coastline. MMS 77 was replaced by MMS 75 and 79 at a later date.

-in July 1954 approval was given for the disposal of 6 MMS which has been on loan to the Belgian Navy since 1946 and which were now beyond economical repair. It was intended that the vessels should be sold as they lay, after the remove of certain items which were required for further Royal Navy service. All craft disposed of by sale to A.R. Challis, London on 2.7.55.

PATROL SHIPS
Le Ministère de l’Agriculture devait mettre à la disposition du Ministère de la Défense Nationale un crédit pour la construction d’un patrouilleur côtier rapide. Ce bâtiment, d’environ 200 t, devait servir de garde-pêche, surveillance de zones économiques, soutien de la police et de la douane, lutte anti-pollution. Ce patrouilleur devait être livré en 1988 ou 1989. Construction reportée suite à une décision gouvernementale de 1988.

Sa coque, réalisée en CVR (construction verre résine) était originalement prévue pour les (en ce temps) nouveaux dragueurs de mines de la classe M 70. Deux de ces coques furent terminées, mais le projet fut abandonné. Les deux coques furent rachetées à la marine par les Gardes Côtes et baptisées TV171 et TV 172.
1981 : coque allongée de 6 m afin de pouvoir supporter une plate-forme pour accueillir un hélicoptère.
Juillet1998 : accord pour l’achat d’un navire de seconde main destiné à servir notamment de garde-pêche est donné par le conseil des ministres.
Acte d’achat signé le 28.9.1998 par le ministre Poncelet.

racheté en septembre 2003 par Mr Patrick Degraeve, 1460 Ittre, alors qu’il se trouvait en
très mauvais état au port de plaisance de Kampenhout
Ramené en octobre à Ittre, les travaux de restauration débutèrent en novembre et l’extérieur fut terminé en juin 2004.
C’est en faisant ce travail de restauration que le nouveau propriétaire découvrit le numéro de coque. Le MTL 551
Est actuellement (début 2005) basé en aval de l’écluse d’Ittre et naviguera comme bateau de plaisance.

Ces deux MTL ont été remorqués d’un stock de l’armée américaine situé à Kallo vers Zeebrugge par les MMS 187 et 193 (EDV Schlim et Deschutter) durant l’été 1948
Note : dès la libération des bouches de l’Escaut, les navires marchands alliés débarquèrent à Anvers et à Gand les équipements et vivres nécessaires aux armées et aux populations. L’Inland Waterways Transportation de l’armée américaine se mit directement à la recherche de bateliers dans le but de transborder ce tonnage des navires de mer sur des bateaux fluviaux. C’est ainsi qu’une douzaine de vedettes à moteur du type MTL furent affectés à ce service. C’était de petites coques de 12 m, munies de moteur à essence ou diesel de 120 CV et d’un logement où trois personnes pouvaient vivre confortablement. A bord de chaque bateau se trouvait un agent de liaison belge afin d’aider les équipages américains dans leurs rapports avec les bateliers et la population belge. Lorsque les services américains des Inland Waterways déménagèrent vers le Rhin, les MTLs se retrouvèrent à OMA, un dépôt des armées alliées sur la rive gauche de l’Escaut à Anvers.
Au sein de la ZM/FN ils serviront au service de destruction des mines anti-débarquement. Ces deux remorqueurs draguaient en couple les mines allemandes à faible immersion, appelées Katieminen. Ils opéraient dans un champ de mines perpendiculaire au môle de Zeebruges.

Lockmaster of the fishing dock raised the alarm at 0500 LT, the firebrigade was only able to extinguish the blaze by 0900 LT. Nearby moored vessels e.g. the PASTER PYPE (290/49) and two old MSI hulks also used by the Marine Cadets towed away by the Ostend based tug WALVIS (128/65).

L O j'ai aussi entendu parlé de cette 2 ème Frégate,dans des archives que j'ai vu il y a quelques années un nom figurait Prince Royal si mes souvenirs sont bon d'après les archives le F910 aurait appareillé avec 2 équipages pour allé chercher au USA cette 2ème frégate mais comme tu le dit"Achat non réalisé" si d'autre personne ont des informations a ce sujet placé les sur le forum MERCI

Billet pour 1958 et peut-être depuis fin 1957 navire école endroit:arrière port de Bruges jusqu'au départ de l'Ecole Nautique vers Lombarsijde date estimée fin Aout 58?;la période dont je suis certain 06/02/58 jusque début 1959 mutation comme instructeur à l'Ecole Nautique.De cela ont pourrait en déduire sans trop se tromper que le Lt/z V.Billet était dans l'arrière port de Bruges de +/-fin 1957 à fin 58.
