NATO’s Mine Counter Measure Group (SNMCMG1) Conducts NORTHERN COASTS 2010 Peacekeeping Exercise in the Baltic
On Monday 13 September more than 60 ships, planes and helicopters from 13 countries started their participation in exercise ‘NORTHERN COASTS 2010’. International naval forces deployed to conduct simulated peacekeeping operations in the northern Baltic Sea and NATO’s Standing Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1) is taking a very active part in the exercise.
In this year’s exercise, co-organized by Finland and Germany, units from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Latvia, Germany, Norway, Poland, Sweden, UK and USA will participate. The Northern part of the Baltic Sea, particularly the Gulf of Bothnia, is the actual arena for the international naval operations, with the manoeuvres divided into three phases.
The first phase of the exercise - the harbour phase, was held on 10-12 September in the city of Turku (Finland). The 4,000 people involved in the exercise (crews from ships, staff members, etc.) used this time to make the final preparations for the operational phase. On Monday 13 September the second phase began, with the ships, planes and helicopters operating independently and in tactic groups. The purpose of this phase is to improve the cooperation at sea within the international structures. On Sunday 19 September, the third and main operational phase of the exercise is scheduled to begin, and include a wide variety of international peacekeeping operation activities, including sea, air and land operations. Northern Coasts 2010 is based on a fictitious scenario, however, it assumes the potentially dangerous real-life situations that may occur while being at sea. According to its objectives an international peacekeeping force is created by the UN resolution to avert local conflict on the northern Baltic Sea. Actions taken within scenario will include procedures for emergency response, protection of maritime transport, the fight against terrorism and sea piracy, embargo operations, humanitarian assistance and rescue operations - virtually all the military aspects of peacekeeping operations at sea. The final phase of the exercise will involve combined naval, air and land operations. Northern Coasts is one of the largest exercises in the Baltic conducted this year. Almost 3,000 merchant units transit the Baltic in a daily basis. Most of it is maritime transport, designed to deliver different kind of goods for the maritime economy of neighbouring countries. Safety of shipping in the Baltic is crucial to ensure security and stability for all Baltic-related countries.

Hello,

Ships go to sea for Joint Warrior 102
On Sunday, 3rd of October, ships of SNMCMG1 went underway to start sea phase of Joint Warrior 102. After the weekend filled by pre-sail conference, and preparations for going underway, all SNMCMG1 ships left Glasgow (Scotland) and started their transit to area of operations off coast of Scotland. This is the last opportunity for SNMCMG1 this year to cooperate in scenario-based exercise.
Joint Warrior is a multinational exercise coordinated and led by UK that combines land, air and maritime operations in an unstable region of the world. It is the second Joint Warrior exercise this year, and the scenario evolves onwards from the point it stopped in May. There are more than thirty ships from 14 countries and two Standing NATO Groups taking part in the maneuvers. Mine countermeasures vessels of SNMCMG1 are responsible for preparing (clearing) coastal waters for frigates and destroyers (SNMG2) to enter ‘northern disputed zone’ between Dragonia and Caledonia. At the same time the ships are ready for counteracting asymmetric threat and other terrorist activities in the region. The sea phase of the exercise is conducted from 3rd to 13th of October in the North Sea between UK and Ireland. The goal of this exercise is to enforce peace in unstable region of the world having UN Security Council Resolution as a mandate to do so. The main focus for Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1) is conducting anti-mine operations as well as responding to any other possible situations that are expected to take place during any conflict. The scenario for Joint Warrior 102 is entirely fictitious although there are similarities with present and future areas of naval operations. It has been designed to support the exercise aims and objectives. Due to conflict escalation between three artificial countries UN Security Council has developed a resolution upon which NATO forces are currently getting into the unstable region to resolve the situation.
