LUISA CACERES DE ARISMENDI, PARAMACONI, TAMANACO Tanker's arrested off Puerto de la Cruz Oct 11 23:55 The crew of the 'Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi', which transports gasoline from the El Palito refinery, has been arrested with a shipment of 20,000 barrels of gasoline that cannot be unloaded because the standards of the World Health Organization have not been met. The ship has been moored on the Puerto de La Cruz anchorage since Oct 4, 2020. The tankers 'Paramaconi' and 'Tamanaco' were in the same situation. The crew of the tankers were subjected to inhumane working conditions with rationed water and food, without medical care, no provision of safety equipment and, despite the fact that they remained on board for six continuous months, they earn 400.000 bolivars weekly. The ships were in precarious conditions, reaching almost operational collapse, to the extent that the gasoline discharge pipes have deteriorated.

RHAPSODY Migrants jumped over board in Bari Oct 12 00:01 Two migrants aboard the 'Rhapsody', which berthed at the port of Bari on Ocz 8 for a technical stop, on Oct 10 tried to escape by jumping into the sea, but were recovered by the police. In the port, a security cordon has been created by the police to prevent similar situations from recurring. In the late evening of Oct 9, the results of the swabs carried out on 34 people on board, close contacts or roommates of 12 people who had had symptoms comparable to Covid-19, also arrived. Isolation measures have been adopted according to the health protocol. Those who landed were negative. From 8 to 10 Oct, after the necessary health operations, about 400 people (including 79 children) out of 805 migrants on board, were disembaked and all destined at centers in different regions of Italy. The ship then left the port of Bari.
53 migrants tested positive for COVID 19 Mon Sep 07 12:49 The numer of coronavirus positive tested migrants on the 'Rhapsody' that docked at the Cala Pisana pier in Lampedusa has risen to 53. Until the evening of Sep 6, 32 COVID 10-positive migrants were to be embarked. Probably new positive results of rhino-pharyngeal swabs have arrived. Another 60 people will be boarded and on the «Rhapsody» there will be a total of 814 negative migrants. The ship managed to dock at the quay after several attempts due to adverse weather conditions.
Passenger who was on Rhapsody tested positive for corona virus Mar 05 19:18 A passenger of the 'Rhapsody' was tested positive for the coronavirus virus in Tunis. He did the test only a few days after arriving in La Goulette. The ship berthed in Genova on Feb 28, 2020, at 11.30 p.m. for scheduled maintenance work. It was not in quarantine, as there were no cases detected on board. However, in order to ensure isolation with active surveillance of the domiciled seafarers, there has been temporarily inhibited access to third parties. At the moment there were no reports of any kind from the crew, and there was constant monitoring in collaboration with the authorities in charge.

SNAV ADRIATICO Eight migrants tested positive for COVID 19 Oct 12 00:04 308 migrants, who had landed in Lampedusa (in the last hours, boarded the 'SNAV Adriatico' on Oct 10, 2020. Eight have tested positive for the Coronavirus and were therefore accomodated in the appropriate quarantine area, while all the others went to their cabins.
Second quarantine ship in Augusta Sep 10 12:19 The 'SNAV Adriatico' arrived just south of Syracuse in the morning of Sep 10, 2020, and was due to dock in Augusta around 5 p.m., being the second quarantine ship chartered by the Italian government to carry out the quarantine of migrants arriving on the island and thus free the hotspot of Lampedusa, which has now collapsed for weeks. In fact, the approximately 300 migrants who boarded the ferry a few days ago come from there and will remain on board until the end of the quarantine.
Mayor opposes quarantine ship Sep 07 12:47 The 'SNAV Adriatica', on which migrants who were in Lampedusa were hosted, was headed to the Port of Pozzallo. The mayor, Roberto Ammatuna, opposed this decision, for which he claims not to have been involved, for reasons of security and logistics at the port.

KARNIKA Remaining crew running out of everything Oct 12 00:26 The crew of the 'Karnika' said on Oct 9, 2020, that they had power back-up to last only 36 hours. For the past week, they have survived on cornflakes for breakfast, paani-puri for lunch and burgers for dinner as food stock is depleting fast. 42 men have refused to disembark the ship caught in a legal wrangle and abandoned by its owners for all practical purposes for almost a month now, fearing they will not be paid their dues if they leave the vessel. The Director General, Shipping, Amitabh Kumar, received complaints on Oct 8 about non-payment of dues to the crew and planned send officers of my Marine Mercantile Department to the ship to conduct an investigation Apart from being placed under arrest by the Bombay Port Trust following non-payment of dues, the vessel was also under arbitration at the Bombay High Court (HC) because of unpaid bills to vendors. The crew members, who were called to carry routine maintenance, after the ship docked in August were kept in the dark about the legal troubles by Mumbai, Khar-based Campbell Shipping Pvt Ltd, which holds the recruitment and placements services license for the vessel. The crew has not been paid since August and according to them the total arrears stand at over $ 227986. The dues of vendors mounted because of the devastation wrought upon the cruise industry by the COVID-19 pandemic. The creditors arrested the ship through the Admiralty Court. The crew members were assured that they will receive their salaries as soon as the funds are received.

Global Mercy Wärtsilä powers world’s largest NGO hospital ship Oct 12 08:11 The technology group Wärtsilä announced today that Mercy Ships, a philanthropic organisation providing essential healthcare to needy patients in developing countries, will be utilizing its engine technology in the organisation’s new hospital ship. When completed, the Global Mercy will be the world’s largest vessel of its kind, and will be powered by four Wärtsilä 32 engines. Wärtsilä will also provide a five-year services maintenance agreement, . The comprehensive agreement covers parts, field service, asset monitoring, and full technical support to keep the hospital ship running at all times. Mercy Ships expects to take delivery in 2021, and the ship’s maiden voyage is planned later in the year to Africa where crew will provide vital surgical care at no cost. The Wärtsilä engines are double resilient mounted, and comply with the DNV VIBR vibration classification. This smooth running capability is of special importance for a hospital ship with onboard surgical operations taking place. The supporting maintenance contract is part of the company’s Lifecycle Solutions offering. It provides guaranteed operational reliability with performance targets determined from measured data. The measurable indicators can include, for example, availability, reliability, and fuel consumption. The agreed targets are reached through automated key performance measurements, optimised maintenance, and remote advisory. How was it adjusted to be a floating hospital? “At Wärtsilä we are proud to be partnering with Mercy Ships and to be providing the power for this ground-breaking vessel. Because of its function as a floating hospital, special considerations have had to be taken into account, and we have worked closely with the owners and the yard to ensure that all requirements are met. As a global corporation, we are committed to supporting sustainable societies. We are therefore both honoured and humbled to join forces with Mercy Ships, and to support it in successfully carrying out its valuable humanitarian work,” says Jaakko Eskola, President and CEO of Wärtsilä Corporation. “The Global Mercy is a fully purpose-built ship with state-of-the-art technology. In order to secure an uninterrupted power supply onboard the vessel, it was important that we have high quality engines available. The Wärtsilä 32 engines supported by the extensive maintenance agreement, provide this assurance, which will help us as we carry out our mission to bring hope and healing to the forgotten poor and to positively impact global healthcare. We welcome Wärtsilä as a one of our key suppliers in enabling this work,” says Russ Holmes, Director of Corporate Development of Mercy Ships. Previous hospital ships have all been conversions from passenger ships and other vessels. The 174 metres long, 37,000 ton Global Mercy is a one-of-a-kind ship. It features 12 decks, two of which are for the hospital, including six operating theatres, 102 acute care beds, and 90 self-care beds. The vessel accommodates a crew of up to 641 volunteers, and additional space can host up to 950 people at any one time when in port. Another hospital vessel of Mercy Ships is AFRICA MERCY, build in 1980.
